Title: RTE Toora - Sat 27 November 2021
Post by: Williamson on October 12, 2021, 04:25:37 PM

After two false starts, Garry and I had a chat last week and decided this was worth a third attempt, so COVID travel and gathering restrictions being sufficiently relaxed, we will have ....

Yeah, got a message from Russ too.  I dunno what's happening, I can see pics okay in the post on my laptop using Google Chrome, but not on my iPhone, or on the laptop using Microsoft Edge.

The pics are hosted by Imgbb, when I try to view them there, it looks a mess, so I'm thinking it's a problem at or with the host - yeah, but that doesn't explain why I can see 'em on my laptop using Google Chrome.

What operating systems are yuse guys using?

Just a quick story from the past.

Army exercise down Gippsland many years ago. We had to camp for several nights in the Yarram area.
There were many ants on the ground, so I strung my hootchie about 4 feet above the ground, and slung my hammock from the same attachment points. At one stage of the night another digger came to call me to change guard duty with him, but as he couldn't see me, only the empty camping bed on the ground beneath, he walked away and ended up doing a double guard shift.  :rofl

Advice received from Kym at the Royal Standard Hotel .... We are capped at 50 in the bistro so you should be fine, yes everyone will need to provide proof of vaccination.

So ladies and gents, please comply with:

Re. numbers, we have 20 already, but I think we'll be safe from exceeding the cap, as follows:

Okay, there's a coupla if's, but's & maybe's above.  Numbers will go up and down, and to be fair to our hosts, let me know ASAP if your are dropping out, so as I can advise our hosts, and they may be able to add one or two to the bistro numbers.

Whew!!!!

So ladies and gents, please comply with:
  • Be prepared to show your proof of vaccination.
  • To provide #1, you will need to be double vaxed.
  • QR code check-in procedures - not try and fake-it, like some joker tried at Moyhu (he is NOT invited to attend anymore RTE's).

Do they have manual check ins like South Australia (ie. a piece of paper where you write your details)?

Yes, but these have been gradually phased out and repaced with the QR code system.  Most venues still have a paper and pen, but these seem to be mainly for the elderly, low tech people without a smart 'phone.

Joker at Moyhu pretended to QR code check-in, when the lady publican (think she was alert to him) asked to check it, he said his 'phone wasn't working, she said that he should sign-in then.  After doing this he told us that when asked to sign in, he puts "Mickey Mouse" or "Donald Duck" and a wrong 'phone number.

I think Rex, Garry and Nigel heard what I said to him.  He's a BMW rider, so his intellect ..... no better not go there.

I don't do that, but often travel without a phone so use manual sign ins.
Title: Re: RTE Toora - Sat 27 November 2021

I have to do manual sign ins, because my phone is too old and not connected to the internet.

I refuse to allow the GOVT to FORCE me to buy a smart phone.

No one is forcing you, Kev...all businesses are required to provide pen/paper so people can manually sign in if needed...  :thumb

Yeah, a manual sign-in, in leiu of a QR code check-in, will suffice.  Or, someone can check you in as their 'guest' as they check-in.  I do this for my 98yo mum - smart 'phones and QR codes are a bit much for her.

But you will need to have your vaccination certificate, if that's not on a smart 'phone, a printed hard copy will suffice.  Although (thinking outside of the box), a copy on a laptop would be okay (if you have a laptop).

Re. a smart 'phone, these days I would feel naked without one.  In some respects, I congratulate you for being so independent.  But (there usually is a 'but', although this time not a big hairy butt), I think you will find that in the future, there will be more and more things smart 'phone and technology dependent.  I would encourage you to reconsider your current position.

Yeah, they're not cheap if your buying new or a late model, but many used ones can be picked-up very cheap, or sometimes for SFA.   When I busted mine on a trip, I got a secondhand one off Facebook Market Place for $50, swapped the SIM until I got my old 'phone repaired.  You could have that (for a coupla jars of jam), except that it's now with a "friend" who busted theirs (I don't think I'll ever see either of them again).

You never know, someone on here may have an old 'phone sitting in a drawer looking for a new home.

I quite often did that for Sue when we were out shopping but the guest option disappeared once I added my vaccination certificate to the QR check-in app.
Make sense I guess but it's a bit inconvenient...

I don't have any need for a smart phone, all I ever do is 'ring ring, Hullo?' type calls, maybe 5 per week, and a couple of SMS messages daily.
My phone rarely even leaves my desk, except if I am going out of town.

I get my second jab next Tuesday, and will get a hard copy of the results.

Yeah you can only have one per person as well, we tried to set it up for Father-in-Law to be connected to Mother-in-law's account and it wouldn't do it, we had to make a whole new email address for him on the phone we had to get him which he never uses

Huh?

I agree.

I plan to print mine on a licence sized card and put it in my wallet.

Certificates that are attached to the VicServices App will be seen as 'secure'.  Not so for printed (and even laminated?) hard copies or even an electronic (pdf?) non-VicService certificate - counterfeit versions of either are very, very easy to produce.   Whilst these may be accepted in the short-term, I doubt it for the long-term as the ne'er-do-wells will quickly learn how to do this, and the authories will be alert to these tricks.

The VIC method is much simpler, check in (using saved places, or QR scan), add your mum if necessary, hit check-in button, when asked by a venue operator, both processes are on your smart 'phone (well not Mum's VAX certificate).

Hey Kev, I know you love doing it but personally I reckon you should give the Jam a miss for this RTE as with the high number of attendee's it's gonna cost you an arm and a leg!

By my calculations you'll be up for something like $182!  :o

Plus...there's the issue of how you're going to pack 26 jars into your topbox... :whistle

Does the 1100 do that too?  I wonder if mine will do that.

PureProfile surveys have paid decently for the last 3 months. Enough to pay for jam, anyway.  :grin

Nice little earner there Kev.  But to provide some perspective, it'll probably only take JD an hour to exptort that from one of his clients, and or less than an hour for Russ just re-arranging his super portfolios.

Income from online surveys pays for my rego, jams, and quite a few tanks of fuel each year.

$420+ tax free per year, for just a few minutes per day at the keyboard.

Expensive, since the manager changed and I no longer get discounts, lol.
Still my shout for the club, tho. Who can put a price on friends?

Yeah, Doug's a mate from AusTouring.com, he's been on a coupla RTEs.  He's a Kiwi and rides a BMW, aside from those two minor flaws, a good bloke.

Looks like a wet day here tomorrow afternoon/evening, 5 to 10mm expected, with less than 1 mm per day until Sunday, which should be dry. Might be a little dampness for me for the ride on Friday, but no big deal, less than 1mm all the way to Korumburra.
Have organised my kit, tyre pressures checked, Topped fuel tank yesterday arvo. All I have to do is pickup the jam on Thursday, fit the kit to the bike, and will be ready to leave Friday morning somewhere between 8/10am, arrive Korumburra for o/night stop between 3 and 5pm.
Then its only around an hour run on Saturday morning to Toora

Just confirmed with pub that we'll have approx. 25 for lunch, and advised that some people will arrive before 12:00 noon, we'll sit down at 12:30pm and start eating around 1:00pm.

Response from the pub is that everyone needs to QR code or sign in, and proof of double vax is required of everyone.

Having just done a four day road trip in VIC and NSW with some other mates, these were common requirements of venues visited, and was not a problem for any venue or any of the riders.  So, I hope we can all be good boys and girls, and not embarass each other or the Club.

Yeah Sue, a great turnout, despite a couple of late cancellations, a total of 21 in the end.  It was good to catch-up with some old and new faces.  Nice old town, settled in the 1860's, lottsa history, will spend a bit more time there next trip.   Nice pub too, despite a bit of a kitchen stuff-up (and grump in the kitchen).

On the way home, Helen and I figured that the stuff-up was in our favour.  We ordered a scallop entre each, received a main course.  No wonder we couldn't eat our main cousre as well.

There were a few pics taken, can you and Vera post some for all to enjoy.

Yeah, but quality pics with 9 ST's, which must be the biggest collection of ST's in AUS since Port Sorell in 2019.  If I'm wrong, someone will be along soon.

We could've had 11, if Rex's ST1300 didn't have a flat battery (not sure why they didn't ride the ST1100) and came on the blue Goldwing, and Gordo didn't bring the tin-top.
