Does anybody know what the ST sump is made of and can it be welded went over a kern today and now it's dripping oil which I only changed 2 hours prior ... Knew I should have stayed in bed
-
Its an Aluminium Alloy, not sure if it weldable. Mind you there are wizards out there that can weld near anything.

An in situ repair can be made with 'Devcon' or Loctite 3801 type epoxys. May have to drain oil and clean with petrol or thinners before application. Good luck.

I know there is an approved repair for aircraft crankcases using Araldite, so if it's good enough for them...

:eek :eek :eek
Not on the Aircraft I work on....

Nor any I've worked on. Have used Devcon for filling small dents in flying surfaces, and repaired an alloy sump on a racing car.

That's because you don't work on Continental piston engines.
And that's assuming the approval hasn't been withdrawn since I was involved with them.

OK here is where Im at, the sump is weldable repair cost approx $100-$150 fix and will be fixed in 1 day.
New sump cover is $185 and can be dispatched from Japan on the 31/08/12 :cuss......cheaper and quicker repair option underway.

At least you know, that a new one can be had if the weld doesnt take..
(while the sump is off, I guess you could use some silicon ot double seal it from the inside.. :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin (Just joking, You would need aircraft fuel tank sealant for that.. >:() )

$100-150 is a lot for a simple TIG repair OzRider. I've had holes in crankcases where conrods tried escaping repaired for 1/3 that price.

Made from Magnesium Alloy, and will need a specialist welder to do the job...
I'd be a bit more concerned about your rims though if you rode over a kerb that hard to crack your sump.... :-/
But I wouldn't bother getting it welded to tell you the truth, buy another sump cover... Here is one on eBay for $70 including all the bolts, all you will need is a gasket...

Presuming yours is a 1300cc
