Most of the work has been easy enough but parts are bloody expensive still a few jobs to do then turn the garage into a spray booth she is going to be GOLD  8) if all goes well might do the ST1100 next year.  :wink1

"Gold".  Good choice.  I suppose it would be boring, but it seems a shame there are so few gold coloured ones.  It's a bit like the Honda Blackbird that can be found in almost every colour but black.

No problem, with STs.  They should be red, logically.

Thought I would bring this up to date should have done it as I went along sorry for that  :-[ anyway taking things apart is easy.  :wink1

It was going to be a complete strip down and rebuild but when I got to this stage the wiring scared the crap out of me. :eek

So up to know I have changed =

Wheel bearings
Head race bearings
Brake discs & pads
Resealed all brake calipers
Stripped cleaned and re-bushed the forks
Rear shock absorber bush's
New swingarm bearings
Timing belts and tensioners
Rear wheel dampeners
Second hand drive shaft + new seal
I'm sure there's more that I cant think of at the moment.

Had these parts shot blasted and powder coated

That rear plate comes out for wheel removal  :rofl not with a Wing it doesn't.
Pushed it on on my own but I will need a hand getting it off, the table isn't wide enough for the sidestand.

I will have to cobble something together so I can stand level with table.

Very flash looking bike table/trolley.

Some of the boys on this forum have modified their table/trolley's as well.  There are photo's showing same.

I did see somewhere, a bloke used an old cordless drill attached to the front wheel clamp screw and just extended the trigger wires, so he could operated the drill from the saddle.

Now i have the lift no excuses for not getting some work done.

Couple of jobs i have been putting off gear shaft oil seal which i am told is a common fault on the 1500 and a snapped exhaust stud.

Apparently the Wing will run quite well with the timing out since buying the bike i have done about 2500 miles with no engine problems at all, runs well doesnt over heat mpg is about right. So i was surprised when i changed the timing belts and tensioners.

Crankshaft check

Left hand cylinders one tooth out but ran sweet go figure i have set it up correctly now just hope it will run when i get to start her up. :grin

So much excess power that one cog made little difference.  You might pick up one mile per gallon in economy now it's just right.

A bit of corrosion in there Keith!

Common over here even in the garage both bikes are full of condensation the Pan is actually worse under all that plastic.

Also did the fork seals as both were leaking its got progressive springs with a secondary spring inside the main, i haven't seen these before and haven't been able to find out who makes them.

They don't stick out very far but were a pig to get back in without the special tool took two one to compress the spring other to screw the cap in.

Did the head races while at it there was a notch in the steering right in the middle 100,000 miles mostly in a straight line.  :crackup

Special tool for knocking out bottom race ie old chisel
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-F0gIIiPW9S4/UlK4jAODobI/AAAAAAAACfA/UfsG_4kaV98/s800/DSC_0261.jpg)

New races in left in the fridge over night to contract tapped in lightly with a block of wood worked a treat.

Had a job getting this one off without the special tool used a grinder to cut a cross very carefull not to go all the way through then a good tap with a hammer and chisel and it fell off.

These bottom corner lights caused me a headache when i got this bike the previous owner had wired them into the sidelight system.

After a few weeks of owning the bike i lost all sidelights checked the fuse and found a 30 amp fuse in there  :-((( should be 15 amp. The sidelight switch had melted  :fp also some of the wiring and connector.

At the time i got a new switch and just disconnected the lights now its time to sort it.

The reason it melted the switch is these strange bulbs

They are dual element 35w/35w but only one element wired up god knows why no wonder the switch melted.

Took the units apart and decided to replace with Led's

New holder and bulb the holders don't fit in the plastic cups so just glued them in.

I will probably wire these into a seperate switch.

The proper way to control the lights (previous owner that is) would have been to use the switch to activate a relay. Stil, after seeing some of those UK worst DIYer shows, it doesnt surprise me much :eek

New plugs and air filter connected battery  :eek bastard alarm went off about 3 inch away from my right ear now partially deaf try again with the alarm fob in hand. |-i
And she is running  8) but blowing from both silencers  :fp anyway just happy to have her running was a bit worried after all the wiring i have taken off.

Keith, I thought you might like to have a squiz at what I've done with my bike lift, the timber platforms either side of the stand simply lift out of the way once the bike is on the stand, I have cut a section out of the platform so I can drop the side stand prior to lifting on to the centre stand. I ride the bike up in first gear slipping the clutch and walking up on the timber ramps, I also use the ramps for when I'm servicing my car so they're multi purpose I guess. It only took me a couple of days to make up the platforms and ramps and they all work very well. I don't require any assistance putting the bike on the lift or taking it off, when taking it off I simply walk it backwards using the front brake to control my speed going backwards.................hope this helps!! :grin

I see you've done the easy stuff first- put on the panniers and topbox.    :grin

I don't envy you when it comes to rebuilding the panels (and there are plenty of them).

A naked gold wing is very intimitating. So much work. I hope you get your rewards in the end.
How much was that bike bench ? Looks very practical but maybe digging a pit in my carport is better and cheaper.

Have you tried toothpaste or brasso

I use several different polishing paste (course to fine) with an eletric auto polisher.

Do you have Novus Auto Windscreens over there?  They have three grades of paste for polishing out scratches in perspex.  Be aware that motorcycle screens have a thin hard coating which, when removed, will leave the softer perspex more vulnerable to damage.
