MYST's Replacement
« on: November 07, 2015, 05:39:04 AM »
The FarRiders among you will already know I've replaced the sadly roo-ted MYST with a new ride. Salvaged parts of MYST are still kicking around OzStoc on other bikes and I'm kicking around on something a bit different. A KTM1290 Super Adventure.  I've put a few thousand k's on it now, it's different to the ST1300. The ST was a beautiful, sit back, relax, old schoolish cruising machine - the KTM is a pointy edge of the sword weapon with 160 ponies on tap.  Is the KTM better? On gravel and on Thunderbolts/Oxley Hwy it is. In the rain the ST wins for protection but loses on traction control (if you want to push it to that).  On the freeway and open roads with cruise on (if you have cruise on the ST) they are similar - smooth and capable. Luggage space is similar with panniers and top box.

I'll stick around if you don't mind, it'll be nice to catch up with MYST's aux tank, panniers etc from time to time and I've made some great friends here.

Thanks Chris! The Super Tenere stays, I've been taking it bush lately and it's a workhorse. It's a fantastic bike and even at 75,000km it's not showing any age. The KTM is the 2-up tourer and dayride blaster.  I had plans for MYST next year to do some decent 2 up touring with Verity who, as you know, loved being on the ST1300 and wants to go up the centre.  The KTM's 30 litre tank, cruise, heated seats, grips, semi-active suspension ABS/Traction modes, power-standing grunt etc etc to my mind strangely aligns it more closely to the ST1300 (for someone with long legs) than the Super Tenere for those needs. If I could only have one bike, the KTM would probably take it because it's capable of everything from a blistering track day to the desert. But you pay for those capabilities in one bike, almost as much as a new Super Tenere and a decent ST1300 would cost.  I'm not selling the Road King either :-)

I'll stick around if you don't mind.........

You are most welcome, and an inspiration to us beginner LD riders.  The KTM looks like a great bike for a taller rider, and with all of the fruit.

They're an awesome machine!  The local KTM dealer has one as a demo and so far I've managed not to test ride it in fear of the outcome.
