I'm italian, and at the time i was dating this girl that was one year older than me. She was studying oriental languages and cultures at the uni and was also learning chinese (mostly cantonese).
One day we went on a date to a chinese restaurant in her city.
The waiter didn't speak a word and the italian translation on the menu was so bad that was literally impossible to understand it.
So, we ordered something that was supposed to be duck.
The waiter came with our meals, we started eating and my gf said "Weird, this meat doesn't feel nor taste like duck"
Me: "I don't know, never tried duck before, but let me call the waiter, maybe he brought us the wrong dishes"
So i called him.
The waiter, in a very poor italian: "Yes? You no like?"
Me: "No, we like, we were just curious... What's in these dishes? Duck?"
The waiter, still in italian: "Me no understand, sorry"
My gf: "Let me try..." *asks what's in the dishes in cantonese
The waiter: *answers in mandarin*
My gf: "Oh damn, he speaks mandarin"
Me: "And what did he say?"
My gf: "He said... Something. I guess."
Me: "Ok, i'll fix it. Excuse me" *points the finger to my plate* "quack quack?"
The waiter: *points the finger to my plate* "No no, woof woof"
