I don’t Pete, sorry. But I’m super-interested in what you are doing. I’ll be following the project with great interest. Do you have metalworking tools and abilities yourself, or do you plan to use an engineering shop ?

I have a reasonable workshop and some modest skills, and thus expect that I could do most of the work myself.

Williamson, thanks for the offer, but once I get my hands on some standard pegs, I'll see what I can come up with, rather than copy and existing idea.

Whilst yuse guys and gals are waiting for Pete, here's a pic of some little jobbies I picked-up of Gumtree (thought it was on here):



The guy I purchased these off mentioned that he had 'em made up, CNC machined (whatever that means).  They're a quality piece of work, except for the threaded holes on the underside of the footboards didn't line-up precisely with the base of the pillion pegs.   Pillion peg rubbers "off", these "on", simple as that (for me); Pete will find a bit me effort will be required.

Mrs W finds them a bit more comfortable and better than the arches of the feet resting on the pillion pegs, especially on longer trips, which these days is any over 100km.

I'll get some better close-up pics.

Here's a progress report for those who had an interest in this project.

I've made a mockup of two footboards, using 12mm plywood bolted onto the existing footpeg bases, and with an aluminium sheet lip on the inside to minimise hot airflow to the inside of the pillion's feet.  Chris tried this in sitting position without riding, and has suggested some modifications, so we haven't got to the "Road Test" stage yet.

I will therefore make second pair of mockup boards, which will be square at the toe, just on the inside, with a straight heatshield lip, and the whole board angled in just a few more degrees.  The last photo roughly shows the intended shape formed in in black masking tape.

Once I've made and fitted these, we'll give them a good run to test the shape, as they are strong enough to support the necessary weight, but don't have any vibration isolation.    If this works OK, the final version will be fabricated and bent from aluminium checkerplate for the base and heat shield, with two layers of rubber for the vibration isolation.   The bottom layer of rubber will be thick and soft, and the top layer will be thin and harder.

I'll post some more info as the project progresses.

Julie and I are watching with keen interest. The only question I have is will the floor boards make wrestling the ST back that bit more difficult or painful to the calves of the rider?

Time will tell.   I've finished the pair of plywood Mockups MkII, and now need to fit them to the bike to test comfort and foot positions.   It's been too bloody hot to be doing anything in the shed, so they will probably go on next week.

Agree re too bloody hot - I took Scarlett down for her pre-Byron Bay service yesterday and rode her home this evening. The new Bikequip windscreen is fantastic except when it's over 35. It was only a 20 minute ride home but I've resolved she'll stay in the shed once the temps get into the mid 30's.

I've fitted the pair of Mockup Footboards MkII, made from 12mm plywood.   I reckon the lip on the inside needs to be higher, but first we need to take the bike for a decent run and check the boards for comfort, foot position and heat shielding.

It's occurred to me that if the main problem that I'm trying to overcome is hot feet, there may be a simpler and better looking solution than the boards.  I've orderd some exhaust wrap and will try wrapping the short section of exhaust pipe that is near the pillion's toes, and see if that works.    I'll wrap the area between the red lines in the second photo.   If the cause of the feet heat is radiant heat from that part of the exhaust, the wrap might do the job, but if it's caused by hot air from under the bodywork, I will have wasted my $14 which is all I've paid for the wrap on fleabay.  It wouldn't be the first time I've thought of claiming bike experiments as "Self Education Expenses" on tax when my brilliant ideas have failed.

Pete, that's a problem the 1100 doesn't have because it has heat shielding in that area.

I like your foot board idea - wonder if there's much difference on mounting between the 1100 and 1300.

We've given the plywood mockups a good run, but not on a particularly hot day.   Chris was happy with the comfort, and based on her feedback, will make a small design change and fabricate the final version from plate aluminium with a rubber foot rest.

In the meantime I plan on going back to the OEM footpegs, and try the exhaust wrap option as described in my earlier post.   I'll put up more photos and info as this project progresses.

Back in 2010, the wife was commenting that the standard footpegs were giving her arch pain after some time on the saddle. Also commented on the heat issue but was not a big deal. The heat issue was resolved with a decent pair of CE rated boots which provided a thicker sole and thus greater protection.
After looking and thinking then looking and scratching, came across a pair floorboards meant for a Goldwing. They were described as Mini Adjustable boards. I did not want long boards as I did not want them to interfere at all with my legs and I needed them to swing back without touching the panniers.  After checking mounting differences between the Gold wing and the ST1300, no obvious ones, I ordered them from JC Whitney in the US. On arrival found that they were chrome with high rubber inserts. They fitted directly except for the position due to the swing back angle of the peg mounts. I needed to maintain the swing back capability safety wise. This is important as 2 years ago I hit a 1 metre long goana. Amongst other events, its body hit my left leg forcing it back. If the floorboards had of been fixed I would have had a rear lower calf injury to the leg.The final position of the boards needed correction which was achieved using press fit aluminium wedges inserted from underneath which raised the position of the boards to level, i.e. level  longitude to the bike. The wedges are not visible only from underneath. The only other adjustment is the fore and aft tilt to suit foot position angle. This is a spline adjustment locked by a bolt. After this no problems at all. The high rubber inserts gave a cushion type support as well a good grip when wet.
The sad part of this post is that I cannot find them anywhere online anymore. I am sure that there will be an equivalent somewhere.

Here's a photo of the exhaust wrap.   We went for a decent run with the wrap and standard pillion footpegs and it wasn't too bad, but need to go for an hour and a half ride on a hot day to give it a good try.   If the heat problem for the pillion's feet is radiant heat from this part of the exhaust, the wrap may be the answer.  Stay tuned as the experiments continue, and in the meantime, I'm working on the operational version of footboards with heatshield to deflect any convective heat.
