ST1300 Rear Wheel Bearing Failure
« on: June 14, 2020, 09:42:26 AM »
I removed the rear wheel from the 1300 I am parting out to find a serious bearing failure, see photo.
It has only done 116,000 kms
The bearing(bearings) is Item 19 in the attached pdf. Apparently there are two of them.
The main bearings, items 20 and 21, appear to be fine.

I'm guessing there were no symptoms of this failure.  It appears to be well packed with grease.  Is it an easily inspected item during a tyre change?

The grease is a left over from the bearing originally having seals. The seals have gone and balls destroyed. It is easy to inspect, it is what you see on the right hand side of the wheel once it is removed. It is interesting because the addition of these bearings is a major change from the ST1100 design.

According to the parts breakdown at west coast honda, the bearings for the 1100 and 1300 are the same.
I have seen somewhere that there is a single replacement for the dual bearings on the drive side.

(I checked my bearings, and they are good luckily)

A little searching, reveals the dual bearing to be 5204 2RS, which means it has 2 rubber seals.

Sorry Brock but you you looking at the wrong thing. Did you look at my PDF? There are 4 bearings in the 1300 rear wheel.

I didnt see the PDF, but I have now

Hmm, I did look at the 2003 parts breakdown, and just now at the 2009. There seems to have been a bit of a redesign

https://www.westcoastmotorcycles.com.au/partFinder/fiche/honda/2006/st1300pa/rear-wheel#next.

Just shows, that you need the proper year for correct parts

Item 21 part No is 5204 2RS by the way

Might do to check with Bearing services, for availability, probably a lot cheaper than Honda.

Brock I think rather than a redesign Honda may just have the parts listing for 2003 and 2004 wrong!!!!!
