Yep, Have 'em in mine. They give a much cleaner white coloured light as opposed to the dim yellow of the overpriced OEM's. The Xenon is only the gas the lamp is filled with, do not mistake them for HID's, completely different ( some people have and the results are "interesting" ).
I get mine from my local Supercheap or Repco etc. The 55/60w ones do the job very well without having to rewire the headlights.

Those particular ones appear to be low beam only, hence the el cheapo price!

Before the HID install I used to run 90/100's or 100/110's or something like that in my ST1100 without a problem. Heard all the stories about they might melt this and they might melt that but that must be only on bikes that arnt made in Japan, me thinks

Don't the ST1100 have twin headlights like the 1300?
If so you would require these Streak.

While not the cheapest these should be good (the 35w ones - 70w may be a bit too much)
http://www.hid-lightsdownunder.com/service1.html

The set I am running came from jaycar and have worked with no problems. At only $99 not too much price difference, and local backup.

Anyone who has done any basic wiring should be able to help. Essentially just plug all the wires in, they only go in one way, and lengthen the wire on the relay that is provided to extend back to the battery before you fit it all together. Hardest bit may be fitting in the bulbs as you have the same problems with any normal H4 bulbs going into the ST11, with the same modifications required.  Once the bulbs are in all you have to do is twist them to unlock and take them out, as part of the base stays in the headlight.

If you don't do a lot of night riding they could be all you need to have reasonable lighting.  Just make sure to adjust the low beam down with the normal load on the bike.

Sounds a bit like Barry - he says that everytime he tries wiring he lets all the smoke out of the wires !!  If in doubt get someone with a bit more experince gude you. It always pays to have some idea how it is done just in case something happens later on.

Do the HID kits for the headlights turn on straight away?

The reason I ask is because I upgraded the Lightforce driving lights on my Land Cruiser from the original halogen to HID and now I don't get full brightness until they warm up a bit.

Obviously not so much of a problem with low beam as they are on all the time!

I haven't worked on any ST headlights or performed the HID upgrade on an ST, but:
Probably the hardest part to installing HIDs in the ST1100 would be finding a spot to place the extra bits and getting access to these spots (removing plastics etc). I reckon the easiest way to wire it is to make a plug that connects to the old socket (so no cutting into the original loom). If you carry an old bulb and have a problem with one of the HID units then it's an easy job to swap back to the old bulb.

Best thing to do Streak is to find out where others have installed the HID bits and what panels need to be removed to access these areas (if any). Also, are any modifications needed to fit the bulbs into the headlights?  From then on wiring shouldn't be too hard.
Happy to help if it can be arranged.

Rodd, the HIDs take about 10 to 20 secs to full brightness.  Once on the same bulb is used for hi and lo (a magnetic thing pulls the bulb in and out), so instantaneous between hi/lo.  The delay time for driving lights unless you can leave them on for a while is what is holding me back from converting my spots, as conventional bulbs are good for places where you are going on and off all the time.  LEDs may be the go here once they improve a bit more and come down in price.

The modification to the base of the bulbs is the same as for using a normal H4. One of the original bulb plugs is used to trigger the HIDs, but both are still there if a normal bulb has to be used.  The HID wiring is in parallel to the orginal wiring (it comes with its own relay loom and plugs for the bulbs and ballasts).  The plastic that has to be removed is the screen and the panels that are over the headlights so you can get access in there. Removing the side pocket makes it easier to route the wirng back to the battery. The ballasts can be located on top of the headligt or off to each side using ties.  I believe the ABS models have extra gear around there so it is a tighter fit.  A ground wire is need to go up to the ballast area.  What I did was run a ground wire to one of the bolts on the back of the instruments and use that as a common ground pole for the ballasts.  The power wire extended on the relay (best to do this while not connected up ion the bike.

Just think about the wiring as having to do the same as for installing driving lights and their separate relay. The power circuit is common, as is the ground circuit if you use a common ground. Each HID bulb has its own ballast, so if one goes the other should still work unless it is one of the common circuits that have gone.

Sounds easy enough Saaz.
I'd forgotten that they flick up/down for hi/low!

I made and fitted an upgraded headlight loom on my Landcruiser using upgraded halogen globes using relays, and have upgraded my Lightforce 240XGT driving lights to HID which wasn't particularly difficult (more room on a Landcruiser, but negatively switched lighting required some extra components).

Probably simple enough to run +ve and -ve back to the battery and run the switching wiring directly from the headlight socket.

Thanks for the details.

Yes, since the original 45/45W globes are not readily available I tried a set of these. I found a set of 55/60W Xenon globes on E-bay 18 months ago and I was pleased with them. They also lasted longer than the OEM globes with the RH low beam failing within  the last month (November 2011).

I did try the standard 55/60 globes but low beam was to bright for on coming traffic as I was all ways getting flashed. The Xenon globe didn't seem as bright to look at directly and almost no problems annoying oncoming traffic. Since the RH globe blew I replaced it with a spare standard globe until I can get another set of Xenon globes and side by side you can see the difference.

I thought about HID but for me the standard lights are the best on any bike I've had and the Xenon globes make a good improvement compared to the expense of a HID set up.

You will need to cut the tabs off, Mr honda has his own version of the H4 where the tabs are in a different location to every other H4 lamp! They will fit after removing the tabs without the shims, but it can be tricky getting them to stay in.
:) I have been running my headlights with 55/65W lamps for about 5 years and only replaced 1 lamp so far, much longer lasting and better quality light than the overpriced Honda specials!

Yep, just buy locally at the nearest Repco, Supercheap etc. The only shims I have seen are from OS tho.

If I can resurrect this thread....Alan is the Xenon a direct fit or do you need to cut the tabs?...plus I see that shims are avail to hold the bulbs that have been 'modified'...

Cheers  :beer

Kev

I bend the tabs but I ideally the adaptor ring might be the best as it's easy to misalign globe.

The first link is how to fit adapter.

http://illzoni.com/bikes/farkles/bulb/

and found an Australian site to get them from.

https://www.mccruise.com/pages.php?pageid=6

Surprisingly I have bought two sets of globes off E-bay from two different suppliers and the second set was brighter than the first and the first set lasted as long as standard 55/60w H4. More to the point, RH globe failed and was replaced. First trip at night I could see the difference between L and R on the road so I replaced LH globe and kept that as a spare.

Buying locally can be convenient depending on where you live but I haven't I have seen Xenon globes available where I live so for try out purposes e-bay seemed the better option.

As far as brand goes, well I think most globes would be better than Honda's 45/45 watt specials....lol

I have tried modifying H4 bulbs to fit in my bike without the adaptor rings and it can be done with care.  A mirror and flashlight helps as those spring clips either go in first time or take ages.  The adaptor rings make it dead simple to align the bulbs properly, as I have done it a few times on other ST11s.  I have a few Philips Vision plus bulbs with the tabs cut off if anyone is interested..only been used for 5 years or more between a car and a bike :)

I used the "cool blue" globes - hardly do any night riding due to the large number of roo's moving around at night ( hit one once...not gonna go through that again) BUT the high visibility is in itself a wise investment. I used the my Dremmel to grind out a smidgeon of plastic to allow rapid changeover of a replacement globe when required (not taking into account the 1 and 1/2 hours to pull all the plastic off !! ). But only one globe has failed after 5 years----and it only happened on the weekend just past.........I'll replace tomorrow night when I get home from work.  :dred11
