RAM mount for mobile phone with Motocycle Larry Powerlet plug
« on: September 07, 2012, 11:05:29 AM »
Hi All,
You could mount a phone, GPS, or virtually any lightweight device to the steering stem mount using this little project.

I just finished my little project of mounting my mobile phone on the bike. Not for calls, I want to get away from the world! But for my GPS and music (both on the phone). Unfortunately my wife will not be in the best health soon following an operation so I have decided to let the Rego go till about Jan 2013 so I have not tested it but I am sure there will be no problems. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone but you can do this for any phone provided you find the right phone mount. Better give you a run down by photo's to explain.

Photo 1 - the finished result. Note the difference between the original steering stem cover.  Photo 2 - removal of the steering stem cover. Photo 3 – The kit from Motorcycle Larry.com with optional ball, and Powerlet power outlet.
Next I fed the wiring through the steering stem, back up to the top of the steering stem on the outside, under the tank and down to a common power outlet I have from the battery. I wanted the plug (hard wired) so I didn’t have to turn the bike on to have power.

Now, unscrew the plug just below the powerlet plug and screw in the ball (hand tight). Add the ram mount two ball joint and the phone mount. Tighten all by hand and finished, just add the phone. I didn’t put a photo with the phone in because I used the camera off my phone for this write-up.
Costs – Powerlet outlet with power and ball – about $125.00 delivered.

You get charged for each part.
I got my phone mount from SlipGripCarMounts.com. $30 delivered. Expensive compared to other e-bay phone mounts but better quality and I didn’t want my $700 phone to go bouncing down the road because I skimped.
NOTE – This is a powerlet outlet, not a normal cigarette outlet. You must buy convertors to run your phone or GPS which are around $40 but the advantage (I’m told) is that the powerlet plug doesn’t vibrate free. Also, European clothing with heat units built in use a powerlet plug.
It looks really neat but I probably wouldn’t do it again because of the expense. I think it would be cheaper to put a mount off the clutch or brake reservoir. If I’ve missed anything out that you want info on please send me a message.

I got mine also from Motorcycle Larry but without the powerlet I just hard wired straight to the battery as I am using it to mount my Tom Tom GPS on a powered mount. Works extremely well with no vibration. Sits nicely below speedo so everything is in view. Also have installed a power outlet in the locker able glovebox (available from J Car) for quarter of the OEM part from Honda. ie $12.95. Also power direct from battery so no need to have key turned on.

Tony, when you say "...hard wired straight to the battery" and "Also power straight from the battery" I hope you have put fuses in there???? otherwise the first fault you get will probably ignite the wiring and then the rest of the bike! :eek :eek :eek You can get in-line fuse holders and fuses from  Supercheap Auto for a few bucks and it takes minutes only to fit them, but the heartache you can save yourself might be worth the cost of buying a new bike!
Cheers,
Paul

I saw a bike at the Dungandan RTE with a (MILSEC?) ball mount on top of the dash.  It was abeautifully finished and could have passed as a genuine accessory as i"m sure it had the Honda logo on it as well.  If anyone can tell me where to get one of these it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I think you may have seen my ST at the Dugandan. I got this from Motorcycle Larry in the US. You can google him. You can also get the ball from him as well. The postage is a little excee from the US but if you where to order maybe put the idea up on here and maybe some others may like to get some bits all for the one postage.

Hi Tony, thanks for the reply.  I didn't notice it when I rode your bike home that day but i better have another look.  Should be good for the RTE on the 19th, might post a starting point for southsiders, leave about 7 and go over Mt Glorious if the weather stays good.  What do you reckon.  I'll have another look for this ball mount at the RTE.

Hi David,I am meeting up with RobJob at Mcdonalds on Granard Rd @6.45am then catching up with Whizz at Yamanto and going the back way to Esk from there. You could come around here @ 6.20 am and we could ride to meet up with RobJob then. Let me know what you think.
