Earth Strap not reconnected by RACQ guy....
« on: October 29, 2013, 11:20:27 AM »
When my alternator crapped itself a few months back, the RACQ guy thought it was the battery and replaced it ($112.00 - and soon to be re-funded)....

But in an absent-minded moment, he forgot to reconnect my main earth strap which earths my negative bus bar to the battery - hence my heated grips, both sets of spotties and 12v cig lighter power socket have not worked since.        :cuss

With the tupperware off for the first time from that event, I decided to chase the problem with my multi meter (I did not know the earth strap had not been reconnected yet).

So I did what one does at this point and checked all the fuses, relays and power source from the battery.

Luck for me - electrics are a beautiful example for science working by logic and I was able to identify that I had power, but no earth for the current to flow. Unlucky for me was that I had spent over an hour on this cable alone, running it through the frame so as to not be visible and reduce the 'chafing effect' of wear and tear.

When I finally traced it back to its end, I was horrified/relieved to see it was a simple fix. I was also feeling good that science and logic had prevailed.

Tonight I finish mounting/wiring the new LED spotties and put STella back together for an evening ride out to Somerset Dam with a thermos.

Cheers, Diesel

Oh dear!  How sad to miss the simplest of fixes and spend all that time chasing others.
Still, no doubt you learned something.  Maybe it was just patience that improved.
Trust your date with the thermos went well.
Hope Missus Diesel forgives you.

Yes - the cable had dropped down out of view and wasn't obvious.

And if she plays her cards right - Mrs Diesel might get an invite too.       :whistle             >:()

Methinks the storms that passed through this evening might have dampened young Dave's enthusiasm for a roll in the grass with his thermos.
