Seats?

I reckon comfort is going to be a function of many things, for example (but not necessarily limited to):
  • Shape of seat
  • Composition of seat
  • Seat cover material
  • Shape of rider's bum
  • Weight of rider
  • Experience of rider
  • Previous seats rider has ridden on
  • Posture of rider
  • .......
  • .......

I find the riding the ST1300 much more comfortable than my previous ride, the CB1300, but I'm not sure if it's because of a more comfortable seat or because of the more upright posture.

Regardless of which motorcycle seat is more comfortable, there is no doubt that both are more comfortable than this:

I've sat on one of these for 12 hours.  If I can do that, 12 hours on a motorcycle is easy.
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

Motorcycling, the best time you can have with your pants on.

If I'd known I was gunna live this long, I woulda looked after myself better

My Thoughts on the Sargent Seat

I developed some very successful strategies to enable me to sit for long sessions on the OEM seat, when I picked up a Sargent for a very good price from a forum member who didn't get on with it.  I figured that if I couldn't get on with it, I could easily re-sell it.   It's much better than the OEM, being broader and flatter but it's a bit harder than the OEM.   I've got quite a few thousand kilometers on it now, and find it to be very good.   As a bonus it has a document storage pocket under the rider's set and a spot for a small tool kit or other stuff under the pillion seat.

Having lived in both Karratha and Port Hedland for a total of just under 4 years the seat suffered from heat damage over time plus general wear and tear. Getting a new seat was decided but not until we left though I did look online (E-bay mainly) and decided on a gel seat.

The OEM seat was ok for short haul trips of about a day but buy the end of day two something better was needed but I'm reluctant to replace stuff that is still good to use so in July 2010 I ordered the seat via E-bay for about $500 delivered and had it sent to my dad's place for when we got back to SA.

In November 2010 the new seat was fitted after my move back here.

For day trips to the city (Adelaide and back 500 km return it runs rings around the OEM and the longer trip to dad's in Loxton (600 km ret) is still good. For added comfort I made up a goat skin seat cover for it which improved our seating above and beyond what we had before.

Heather isn't a regular long distance like I used to do. Only a trip from Karratha to Perth (3200 ret) plus a couple shorter 1000 km trips. Our last longish trip together was trying for 2012 border ride and also our first almost whole day of non-stop riding on the gel seat. 600km neither of us complained from painful rear ends. I took sick overnight and had to return the 600 km home meaning 1200kms over two days and saddle sore was almost a non-issue.

The seat is shaped so that I sit back further than OEM so my knee doesn't hit the filler panel anymore. I sit a little lower and Heather sits a little higher. The seat looks a little wider but that maybe just the shaping for the pillion. The leather used is good quality but the colouring though not fading seems to be affected a little by rain drops. But a polish every few weeks keeps it looking good.

Though we do have the seat cover I don't use it if it looks like rain and most times at home the cover is in storage. On a hot day ride I put the over on and leave it on until it looks like rain again.

The next (on hold depending on work application outcome) planned trip (950km) is to the rally so it'll be another tryout distance wise for the seat.

I was put onto John Moorehouse for a new seat (from Ozstoc members). I also researched seats that were available for OS. The OS ones were cheaper and I could have kept me original seat, but I went with John for a couple of reasons.
One, he's a local (Australian). I prefer to keep the money in the country and support our local people.
Two, I could speak with John. I visited him (he's in Brisbane and I'm on the Tweed so that was easy) and gave him my brief.
Three, John leant me a seat so I could ride around whilst he worked on the modifications. The seat was GIVEN to him by another Ozstoc member.
Finally, the seat is perfect and after about a 1,000km in the saddle it feels just great. Did 400km on Wednesday and absolutely no evidence of saddle soreness.
So if you're in the market for a new seat encourage you to contact John. 07 3245 3979

I'm flying over for national rally. I'm very tempted to bring my spare seat with me and leave I with John for modifications. I'm sure Blue Owl would thank me for it. The pillion seat is rather crispy on my no 1 seat due to sun damage.

If you are in Perth I have a set that are earmarked for conversion but that is getting further and further away so they are available for loan. Also  travel to Sydney regularly to visit my mum so would be happy to bring them over.

Auspost is your best option to Russell, I haven't heard of others doing any different. Not cheap, but neither is the seat.....but your rump will love you for spending the cash  ;-*

I received the RDL seat for my Beemer a few days ago, and took it for a decent spin today.   I thought the bike was good before, but it's just gone up another notch.   ++ ++

It cost me $75 to send mine by Aussie Post, with tracking and extra insurance, and it arrived at Russell Cycle Products in about 10 days.
