Let There Be Light

This photo shows quite well what the headlight on a ST1300 should NOT look like:  :fp :fp



So I set about rectifying the situation and improving the light ouput from the front of the bike.  :H



A few hours later ( along with a couple of other jobs on the electrics of the other farkles ) at about 20:30 on Saturday night I had a bike that now looks like this at the front:  :hatwave



And here she is in daylight in the carpark at work this evening:  :thumbs



The new lumens are fired up through a 3 way switch, 1: a time delay before firing up to allow starting of the bike with the lights off, 2: OFF ( great for doing maint with the bike powered up ), and 3: ON ( no delay )

What colours did you choose for the "eyes"?

Forgot to mention that bit!!

4300k for the HID's, 35Watt ballasts and white " Angel Eyes", No "Demon Eyes"

I went for the 4300K's as I find the 6000K I have in the spotties is not very effective at dawn and dusk and 4300K is what the car manufacturers use as standard.

That price is US Dollars, it cost quite a bit more with the time delay relays etc, but still cheaper than an OEM headlight here in Oz!

There's science demonstrating the yellower 4300K reflect back what you need to see more effectively than 6000+K.
It's a while since I read it on the US-STOC forum, but a search might turn it up.  Apart from that, it's easier on the eyes of oncoming drivers.

Yeah, I remember reading something similar myself a while ago. It was also a major factor in the decision of which colour to go for.

No flashing lights from oncoming traffic yet, but I think I still have to adjust them up a bit on the headlight itself, as they look a little low with the dash adjuster cranked right up, but it has a very well defined cutoff on low beam.

Ok, so how did the new lumen pusher go last nite?

In short, Bloody fantastic!!  :thumbsup :thumbsup

I was leaving Midvale around sunset last nite, and found the lite to be quite effective in the low lite with all the street lites etc. Once I got a bit further east, and out of traffic and street lites it was very obvious that this light was gunna be pretty good. :clap

On low beam, it lights up the left side very well from the ground up to the cutoff, the right side has a much lower cutoff to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. High beam fills in the areas cutoff on low beam very well with the added benefit of not requiring any more power ( unlike halogens ). The switch from low to high is instantaneous. Add my HID spotties to this mix and the result is WOW!!!!!!!! The headlight seemed to push the lumens a little less down the road than the spotties, but not by much.

At about 21:45 last nite I lost the use of the spotties and did not have time to troubleshoot, so I thought to self, lets see how good this lite is! Well, I cruised at 100 - 110KPH all nite!

The 4300k globes seem to be a good call as well. They don't blind you with the reflections from the roadside signs, and this morning with the sunrise behind me, I really could not tell when the lites stopped being effective and daylite took over!

No pics, as I wanted to test all my other farkles as well and I was very pressed for time. If I remember, I will try and get some this week after work to show the effectiveness of the cutoffs etc.

Now to give the beast a good scrub!!

Hmmm, getting very interested in this set up. 

I must admit though, I have been very happy with the 6000K( when I replaced these I found out that they were 4300k  :|||| ).  I really do believe it comes down to each of us as individuals when it comes to lights.  Our eyes are like fingerprints everyone is different.

The HIDs in my headlight and spot lights (pencil beams)  are 6000K and to me, the Clearwater Krista  LED's are of a similar brightness.

I really do like the cut off and magnification of light.

Yep, thems the ones. Catch is they come with the older large ballasts. Unlike the tiny ones for the headlight

Yep, had to ask for the 35W ballasts as they ship with 50W as standard. The unit is still going very well, no interest from the boys in blue either. The light is very good from them, on the last FarRide they were all I had for most of the night and I was still able to do the speed limit with pretty good lighting. As someone else mentioned, they do point straight into the ground if you get a bit "spirited" thru corners!

Yep, one of the fiddlier bits of the work. You have to take the original one off and install it on the new headlight. Setting the beam height took a while, now I have it set a bit lower for around town, and crank it up a couple of clicks on the highway. The new housing looks as good as an OEM one, probably made by the same people.

It is a very severe disease that does tend to have dire consequences for the bank balance!!

             Very happy with the conversion, no "Gotcha's" to report. With the lights on "high" and my spotties, skippy has no chance now! No need for lots of lights to do the same job and only 14Amps total draw with 'em all on.
