Now that I have a UHF CB on the bike I thought I would canvas the members to see who has a CB fitted to their machines and how they use them.

Are they on all the time when you are riding or do they just get switched on during rides with others?
Do you have a 'most used' channel? is there a channel that is generally accepted as being used by riders or do you just pick a quiet one?
Do you use repeaters or just stick with 'short' range stuff, and;
Speaking of range, how far can you get useable clear two way communication?

And last but not least how do you deal with all the potty-mouthed dropkicks who seem to inhabit the airwaves?

If you are touring by yourself, then 40 is where the truckers are, 4WD users seem to use 39. 5/35 repeater is emergency only. 1 - 8 (31 - 38) are the repeater channels

To deal with the potty mouths, stay off the repeater channels and head further out of town. Mind you, some of those truckers can F###ing swear.

Got me a Uniden UHF Walkie Talkie hooked up with a push to talk, linked to my Austocom.
Only use it to say g'day to the occassional Truckie in the early hours or if someone is travelling on another bike withy me, which is very rarely. Now that we have Mobile phones that work in heaps of places that most go for me those full size CB's are well only for those that like things to be big.
My Uniden UHO65SX I got off Ebay for maybe $200 the pair a few years ago and never had a problem. They use batteries that are rechargeble and last forever, and I only turn the thing on when I use it.
Me Interstate Truckie mate tells me that all round Australia they mostly use channel 40/ But from the Queensland border down to Sydney for some reason it mostly channel 27/28?????

Run a GME TX3100 UHFCB via Starcom that also has GPS, intercom & iPod connected.....use Ch40 most of the time.....Ch29 for the Pacific Hwy......5/35= Emergency channel.....18 Caravan & motorhome.....10 is the unofficial 4x4 channel for convoy use.....1 to 8 for repeaters if in the area.

A annoying mistake travelers can make is NOT reading the handbook with their radio that advisers how their radio works and what channels to avoid for general chatter.....

If your on for a yarn in convoy, pick a channel between 10 and 30 and your set......the mistake ppl make is having a conversation on say Ch 35 which is the input channel for a channel 5 (emergency) repeater station....if a repeater is located in their radios transmmition footprint their conversation transmits over the entire footprint of this CH 5 emergency channel.....may be more than a hundred kilometre circumference of the repeater for a few hours as they pass through....consider the poor emergency radio monitor who has to listen to someone's "waffle" for 3 hrs at 2am.....and may miss a genuine emergency call.

This applies on Ch 1 through to Ch8.......and their repeater input of 31 to 38.

New 80 Ch repeaters are 61 -68 too.

40 is truck chan, 29 QLD to sydney, 14 Ulysses "preferred". and as above

I usually use Ch18 and chat to the Grey Nomads in their caravans. They are usually seasoned travellers with great stories to tell.

Been thinking

I only have on the bike stuff thats super easy to use and stuff that works, so I have a UHF Walkie Talkie that I can use with gloves on in a bracket so that i can change it to any channel I want to use on the go

In my car I have a UHF Cb radio where the actual unit is hidden and the hand piece has all the gear on it like channel selection and stuff. So been thinking, of those riders that have a CB radio on their bike do they have the same CB as I have in my car so they don't have to stop and stuff around every time they want to change a CB Channel or make an adjustment??????

Basically the same Terry, except the microphone removed. The controls are still on the front of the radio, the mic is replaced by the headset, and remote PTT.
