ST1300 air filter replacement intervals
« on: January 30, 2015, 03:35:05 PM »
Just raising this one for discussion. The service schedule calls for replacement of the air filter element at 18k intervals. I inspected mine at 18k and it was clean as a whistle. I therefore ran it to 34k and fitted an OEM Honda replacement. This interval incl. 14k from SA to NT and far Nth Qld in a variety of conditions.  The intake side of the filter was soiled and had accumulated grit and debris but the exit (carbys side) was very clean. There was no sign of dust in the airbox. I stripped the 2 layers of fine mesh and inspected the pleated filter which was very clean on the exit side which suggests it was still doing its job.
Has anyone else pushed the limit with the pleated filter? I am aware of the K&N but I'm not comfortable with a filter which the manufacturers claim performs better as it gets dirtier. Does this mean it's not performing to an optimum level when it's newly cleaned and properly oiled?

The dirty patch is probably in front of the oil breather, The filter in my 1100 has been in there for about 100000Ks.

Unless you are riding in really dirty conditions, you should be safe.

I replaced the one in my 1100 at 120,000 km meaning filter was 13 years old (Jan 2012) when changed and I've done 50,000 km on my current one.

If I had a 1300 no doubt I would be as vigilant as I am with the 1100......
