At a guess young Will-I-am I believe diesel would have the 'clip' diagram laminated and on the wall of his man cave.

It might only be one or two, but they'll be the ones in the very centre of the bike, under three layers of Tupperware.

And yes, Diesel, I knew you'd have the diagrams laid out, since you were the original publisher.
Has the cat been through the shed yet, knocking all the carefully placed fasteners off onto the floor?

Due to the Diesel influence, I have again taken some bodywork off the ST11 in anticipation of doing some tidying up of the current separate wires all going up the front..  So the rough plan is:

Up the front area are/will be to powered:

HID hi/lo beams (existing OEM H4 plugs untouched so H4 bulbs can be put in if required if the parallel wired hi/lo HIDs fail inconveniently)
 HID euro beam spotlights
heated grips using those heated panels under the grips
at least one power socket (already on the bike) but I may add another one right up the front

The wiring plan:

use a dirty big red wire to take main power from the battery towards the front
put 40amp inline fuse in said wire near the battery (I may only use a 30amp fuse in the end - it is just protection in case the wire shorts somewhere before the new fuse box)
put in a 40amp relay up the front to turn power in red wire on/off (I may end up using a 30amp relay, I just happen to have a 40amp relay sitting around)
use an exisitng switch to turn  relay on/off
install fuse box after  relay to which all devices up the front are connected

In all a couple of existing relays and inline fuses will all be integrated.

The aim: simpler wiring going up the front on the left hand side, less messy connections near the battery, ability to turn off power to the front devices off when the ignition switch is turned on but still retain ignition powered protection to stop the battery going flat if something is left on (mainly the grips as most times I can see the lights are on).  HID spots still only come on when hi beam is engaged.

Just have to find a place to put the new fuse box.  After going out and  :think1 I will position it on the removable black plastic garnish under the headlight - just two allen key screws hold it on, so even easier to check fuses than removing the sidecover.

I will also be testing the current draw on the circuit using an old ammeter I had lying around.  It will be interesting to see what the constant and peak power draws are for the HID heading and spotlights.  I am hoping less that the guage of wire I am using  :eek  Of course I only remembered I had the ammeter after I removed all the existing relays and wiring, so I should have tested each light before removing and worked out what wiring and fuses I needed  :||||

The other powered devices are less of an issue. The Zumo is powered on the right hand side along with the McCruise, and the wires from the Zumo have to go the the autocom in the rear anyway.  The UHF is in the tail but needs to go directly to the battery to minimise the chance of interferance in the audio.

Stay tuned. If I go quite either the new bits have been delayed, or it does not work  :'(

Nah.  They want and expect landing lights to be on.   :p

In daytime they're happy just to see the regular OEMs

Tried them out on the street tonight.  Very happy with the result.  I can see way up the road on both sides.
They came with perspex stone covers, but they throw a lot of glare back at me.  I'm experimenting with painting the rims of the covers, but if unsuccessful they will have to be on in the daytime only.

Biggles the trick for this is a bit of leccy/duct tape strapped around the edges mate.  Helps keep them on, and stops the backlighting.

+1 on the tape.  I used that on the Compacs to stop that annoying glare.

My plans are in motion and about half way there.  All the bits have arrived and are being fitted.  An ignition powered wire has been found so just have to splice into it so that the HIDs and heated grips can be disabled with the ignition on.  Doing things a bit more methodically takes time!

I hear ya Saaz - I'm sick of being out whoop whoop and having component or system failures and having to work around/do without the component for the remainder (sometimes 1,000's of kms) of the trip!

I'm doing it properly too. I'm taking pics along the way so I can add in to future threads/posts. John Meara did the same and did a fantastic job so that we could all see the PROPER way things should be done.

The end result is worth the extra effort 10 fold - compared to the "Oh No! Not NOW!!!" utterances out near Broken Hill, Oodnadatta, Meekathara, or Tennant Creek!

Good luck ol mate.

Cheers, Diesel

Tomorrow I will take some photos as I go along, and even the circuit diagram I have been working to.  I don't have a link to it, but I picked up a fuseblock from a local auto electrician that has a single pole input, 4 outputs and LEDs to indicate whether a fuse is blown.  For $25 far better construction that the $13 ones at the auto shops.  Picture is a bit out of focus so will redo tomorrow.

Once I do a proper job on splicing into an ignition powered wire (it comes from the headlight circuit up to one of the headlight relays) all the rest should just fit together. The heated grips pads should just go on and work (famous last words!)

Well, I ran out of the right connectors   :|||| so should put it back together tomorrow.

but....

saw a few drops of coolant making their way back through the V under the carbs, so while the bodywork is off may as well pull the carbs and have a decent look.  Just had a look at my records, and hoses etc were replaced 90,000kms ago at around 95,000kms.  Seems like only the other day really...

Once you start doing one thing, they seem to add up for some reason... :think1

Taking the tank out is easier, and you can get to the hoses under the carbs.

I have done both a few times, and with all the bodywork off I prefer to have a proper look under the carbs. Last time I had cracks in the allow elbows so I want to check them properly.  It would be a pain if one of the replacements has a crack!  Plus while I am at it I want to make sure all the wiring is reasonably tidy.

Ok, bike is back together.  With all the lights on and the grips, still holds at 14 volts.  Haven't had a chance to run the heated grips for long enough to find out the range of the settings, but on high they definitely put out some heat, but take a while to get there. The set I have also uses a rheostat with a relay to set the temperature.

The minor coolant leaked seemed to be due to one hose clamp needing tightening. It was not loose at all, so probably just the effects of a few years of use.

I will put together some photos for a separate report, with some light testing before the comparison test is done in the next few weeks.  I am waiting on TerryB to fit up his HID spots, but with a spread and spot combination.

I've all ready upgraded the seat to a Saddlemen gel seat and I made up a goat skin seat cover to go over that. Comfy..lol
Now have a 10cm taller slightly tinted screen.

On the list are :

Shelf for dash (for hardwired Strike GPS and camera mount)
Police light mounting brackets so I can relocate driving lights
Cruise Control but throttle lock is ok until then
Battery charging wiring for battery in trailer.
Speakers for helmet as ear plugs are pain.

plus non OEM items

Progressive Rear Shock (next on to do list list after timing belt change)
Progressive front shocks (do them when fork seals need replacing again)
Considering a change of colour or at least a respray in original colour.
Upgraded exhaust system when original needs replacing

Added

Forgot mention that I all ready have towbar, trailer, rear rack and Rjays topcase.

Thanks to Tipsy, my dash shelf arrived today so I can cross that off the list and I'll fit that sometime in within the next few days.
