EV battery vapour explosions: Nobody will admit it's a problem

Concerning stuff!  >:()

Examples of Lithium Battery Fires:
https://youtu.be/8nz5ijXcckI?si=X_cVHS_qTXCUus1D

With the ever-increasing popularity of electric cars/scooters (and pretty much everything else) you've got to wonder how bad things will get in the future when it comes to fires.
Its even got me a bit concerned about leaving my ST connected to a trickle charger 24/7 as I run a lithium-ion battery in it.  :think1
As for my laptop, I already try not to leave it unattended when it's hooked up to the charger...

Now you've seen Clickbait Cadigan's videos, how about some facts from fire-fighters.

And yet you park your super heated petrol bomb inside your garage without a second thought.

I now consider petrol cars as mobile Molotov cocktails.

I don't believe anyone would ever deny that petrol powered cars catch on fire occasionally, but you have to admit you probably won't see too many burning underwater like this Tesla!  :whistle  :grin

At 17:50 minutes in, a little fire in Australia.

Not an EV.

Exactly.

Engine block at over 100 °C once the fans stop running. Fuel lines in close proximity. Oil leaks ready to ignite.

I'll say it again, no-one is saying that internal combustion engine vehicles don't catch fire!  :||||

I get that you and cravenhaven are obvious EV fans but denying the issues that come with EVs won't change the fact that when EV vehicles do burn they are a lot harder to extinguish than ICE vehicles and that fact is being recognised worldwide...

Yes, they burn, but far less frequently than ICE do.

They've also now developed techniques to another those fires, and the new chemistry is even less likely to combust.

The likelihood is decreasing every day.

The rate of ICE fires in the greater Brisbane area is around 1 per day. Approx 365 per year. Just on Brisbane.

In over 12 years of EVs, over 120,000 registered, only 6 EV vehicle fires, where only 2 involved the battery.... ONLY 2. Less than 0.002%.

Mobile phones and ear buds contain lithium ion batteries with no thermal temperature control, and yet we'll still put them in our pockets and in our ears, respectively.

I dont deny the issues that come with EV's anymore than I deny the issues with petrol bikes/cars/lawnmowers, or gas stoves/HWS etc. Its the extreme hysteria surrounding it that is disturbing. This post promotes that hysteria, when the risk of such events occuring are minimal.
A couple of years ago a few caravans blew up because the aluminium pipes in the gas stove fractured. There was a mad scrabble as the manufacturer tried to recover from the fallout, but the government regulators were as much at a loss as to what to do as the stove manufacturer. They cant ban gas in caravans, there would be an uproar, but it's downright dangerous. And the injuries from an explosion are normally fatal, or at least very serious.

The stove in my caravan suffered broken pipes twice on my last trip, because they're aluminium and fracture easily in a vibratory environment. Luckily no explosions occured because the gas monitor worked in the first instance, but we had wild flames in the second.
I'll be swapping over to all electric based on Lithium batteries as soon as I can.

The biggest problems with Lithium battery management is not the technology, it's the lack of attention by fire and emergency services worldwide to have ever bothered to address it. Now it is being addressed by everyone running around trying to ban it or otherwise decry its use.
Furthermore, all the EV fires I've seen reported have been intense, but not explosive, unlike petrol fires. Very few people are killed in fires involving EV's because they have plenty of time to exit the vehicle.
And now they want to promote Hydrogen vehicles!!.

I like this bit!

Swappable batteries.

"Swappable batteries" aren't working out too well for this company!  :whistle

Of the multitude of ICE vehicle related fires, it'd be interesting to see how many were started by vehicle fault and how many were started by oxygen thieves intent on covering their tracks or just burning a vehicle for the sake of it. I think Mark Twain got it right when he said "There are lies, damn lies and statistics" and it applies to both sides of this argument.

This is worth watching...

https://youtu.be/F_QcnzeFG98?si=IXeaNuN11WybgLD0

It's interesting that he says that combustion engine vehicles, even with a full tank of gas (petrol), they don't explode, that's something you see in Hollywood, not something you see in real life...  :whistle

I'm looking forward to the day when they burn the EV Kona now...especially if the battery goes into thermal runaway...  :thumbs
