This is a free application that allows your phone to be used much like Spot Messenger
http://bubblergps.com/ (http://bubblergps.com/)
It interfaces with SpotWalla to show your positions on a Google map
https://spotwalla.com/ (https://spotwalla.com/)
I'm currently testing to see how much of my meager 200 Meg per month phone data it uses.
-
Only 200 meg???? I have 5 gig

I'm on a $10 per month plan with TPG, which was fine for my old dumb phone, but the kids gave me an Android smart phone for father's day, and I'm still figuring it out.

The phone is more capable than we are

It's a phone!!! so no data on mine. Heather as 1.5GB data on hers and never uses it either......

My other computer's a phone.

I play with Asterisk so i can safely say that some of my computers ARE a phones :-) ..... but back on track i have been using Bubbler for a while now. I purchased the full edition as it allows you to save more locations between signal access and have lower times between pings. Love it. Makes Mrs more comfortable when i am on a long run.

I am a strong supporter of Bubbler as well. Used it on the trip around oz and a few others.

I got onto it after reading about your trip around the paddock .....

Have been playing around with the IOS version called SWconnect......so far so good, but still in the early stages.......have a SPOT2 but have not activated the tracking for the extra coin. The SWconnect that works through SPOTwalla is a free app and I have 5gig data plan.
I real guess it depends on how much time you plan spending outside your mobile carriers area of coverage.....particularly when we are on sealed roads mostly, is rare when moving that your outside coverage for more than an hour or so on telstra espeacily :think1

One of the good points of Bubbler is that it stores up the track points and then sends them when it next finds a connection
-
For around $11.00, I've upgraded to the Pro version of Bubbler, which can store up to 1500 points between finding phone service, send blips at intervals as short as 5 minutes, and send photos that I take with the phone.
Using SpotWalla I can choose to password protect my maps so that the whole world can't see them, and allow people I choose, to have access to my maps.
-
Using a computer I logged into Spotwalla and created a second device which I cleverly named iPhone5.
Using SWconnect I logged into Spotwalla and then clicked on Device Selection on the SWconnect menu.
Up comes both the iPhone5 and SPOT devices on a separate SWconnect screen. But both have "Not Web Enabled" in brackets after them. The iPhone5 has the number 10431 after it. SPOT has the number 537 after it.
I touch the iPhone5 choice and the SWconnect screen appears with the message "Invalid Device! Device key not found."
Login status button is green. Device status button is red. Device Key: None
I have 5GB of data a month.
Any suggestions how to get SWconnect to recognise the device key for the iPhone5 device?

G'day Lionel,
In "devices" go into Web API Menu and select Enable. This should fix for you mate :like

It might also rely on how much/little you depend on your mobile for everyday use.
Being outside of a coverage for hours at a time can be the norm in most places West and North of Port Augusta even for Telstra. For the few times I have the Adelaide to Port Hedland run I've kept a few dollars in coins to let Heather know I was ok when I got to about the halfway point.

It certainly did, Chris.
Thanks for your help.

Bubbler used just 1 Meg of my data allowance after running continuously in the background for two weeks.
-
Still playing with the settings on mine, not getting a meaningful track when displayed on the map. well not as far as Thailand is concerned anyway, as there is no such thing as a straight road here.
-
I also paid for the full version of Bubbler.
I've recently downloaded Glympse for android which on the surface looks simpler to use. The only downside I have found with it is the maximum time it will only track for 4 hours.
On the upside no website set ups and you can send Glympse links via email or sms. It also has an option to set your destination which enables it to provide an ETA.
I haven't used it for tracking yet, might do next weekends RTE if I remember.

Just teued Glympse around the outside of the house. It appears as if it is near live tracking. Very frequent updates to the Glympse map with a trail as well. The ocon turns to a dot if you stop and an arrow in the direction of travel.
Again it needs the data connection of the mobile phone network.
