Michelin Road 5 (PR5) for ST1300
« on: June 25, 2018, 11:38:50 AM »
FYI - I asked Michelin Oz the other day about availability of both front and rear Road 5 (previously known as the Pilot Road PR) in the "GT" spece for the ST1300. While not really oozing confidence, their response was "GT will be available in January 2019 according to the current planning."

So far they're only available in 17 inch wheels which means nothing for either the 1100 or 1300.

Michelin website only shows the PR4 GT for the 1300 which will also fit the 1100 if you don't mind using a 1300 rear.

I put a new PR5 on the rear in February and have since done 13,422km and the wear bars suggest it should be replaced. The wear bars are well off centre and the centre line looks ok but it is hard to judge. It seems the side rubber is a bit too soft. They are very good in corners but I don't push it by any stretch.

Tyre pressures I run are 44 rear and 42 front

The front tyre is PR5 but its only been on for 3,000km. I don't like it as much as the PR4 it replaced (I got 17,000km on that one and replaced it probably a couple of thousand kilometres early but I was taking Julie to Border Village so I wasn't going to take any chances). The reason I don't like it is I get a buzzing sort of sensation from the front tyre, almost as though the tread gaps/sipes (I think that's the term) are too wide.

If I could go back to PR4, I would but I don't think that's an option anymore. I'm going to try another brand I think unless I can be convinced that 13,000km is reasonable for a heavy touring motorcycle.

My mate with a an R1200RT has been running Road 5's.    Tyre is wearing quite quickly, and the across the surface of the rear the change in compound is very obvious with more tearing of the tyre in the softer compounds.

You may wish to try Pirelli Angel GTa which is giving me reasonable life on the Bimmer.

Maybe the new Dunlop Roadsmart 4's would be worth a try... :popcorn

Dunlop's website says the Roadsmart 4 won't fit the STt1300 BUT it will fit the ST1100. Do the two bikes have different tyre sizes?

Did you enter the bike model then search for tyres to suit?
I did that and came up with zilch too... :||||

Yet, they obviously do make them to suit the ST1300, see below...  :thumbs

... 13,422km is not much less than I get from the rear of a PR4, not much effort to stretch to 15K.  Haven't noticed if you have the GT spec, a mate of a mate of a mate made a mistake and didn't go GT, rear didn't last 15K.

One motorcycle dealer told me that the ST1300 didn't need the GT, guess who I didn't buy from.

Just checked Mark's pic.  Oh dear!  I reckon that would not have got you two up, to Border Village, let alone return.

Definitely GT. That is the rear tyre after Border Village. It was the front tyre I replaced before BV.

Rusty, it was a yank Dunlop site which told me the Roadsmart was definitely not suitable for the ST1300.

I agree, a very good review. My only word of caution is the Yamaha FZ1 is around 100kg lighter than the mighty ST which I imagine would impact on tyre wear. I also wonder what European roads are like compared to the disgraceful condition of many of our roads? On the other side of the coin I'm guessing he didn't fit the GT version required for heavy bikes like the ST and I suspect most of us don't ride as hard as the reviewer does. From a more recent video it seems he got around 13,000km. Personally, I'd like a bit more from a tyre.

Time will tell, but I certainly agree that they'd have to be the go to choice where wet weather riding is common. This little black duck is unashamedly very much a fair weather rider.

I have personally put well over 150,000km of Michelin PR2, 3, 4, and GT rubber in corner apexes all over this country. I cannot see them taking a backwards step in performance or quality.

I'll grab a rear shortly and let you all know my thoughts.

I had a set of Road 5 GT fitted a couple of weeks backup. I’ve now got about 2000k on them.

They do feel very sure footed when cornering. I haven’t tested them out in the wet, which is supposed to be their forte.

My only grumble so far is that they seem to generate noticeably more road noise that the 4’s.  I wouldn’t call it a deal breaker but it’s certainly noticeable between 40-70kph.

Had a set of Michelin PR5 GT's and new front brake pads fitted at Scotty's in Ringwood yesterday.  Returned home around $650 lighter.  Found a twisty route for the ride home, but didn't get to test 'em, that might have to wait for the RTE in two weeks.

The front was getting very close to be in desparate need of replacement, the rear had (perhaps) a coupla K to go, but (to me) it was not worth a separate trip.

The front got just on 15K, don't exact km from the rear as the speed sensor stopped working half way around Tassie last year, but I'm guessing it did around 11 to 12K.

I've also serviced the rear suspension pre-load adjuster, and I'm hoping this will address the rear tyre scalloping I've been experiencing.

Michael how much for Front and Rear? I used Scottys for my 1100 rear and he fitted front pads {supplied} for $20 at the time which I found great, not a bad place to shop. Were you within the 25 k radius?

It is entirely possible that the 5's superior water dispersion characteristic calls for a slightly more aggressive tread pattern which in turn causes more road noise - a fair trade in my books too.

I ended up back with a GT 4 as they had that in stock - Road 5 will come next.

FWIW, today I had a pair of Michelin PR5GS fitted, with angled stems ($530 total).
I bought the bike 17,600km ago last June and with what I was told was fairly new tyres- Pirelli Angels.  On my Autumn Equinox IBA ride they wore through to the steel belt.  I normally get 23,000 from Michelins, so certainly won't be ever choosing Pirellis unless they're the last tyre in Oz and I'm desperate!  I can't even say they felt any safer for being, presumably, softer therefore "grippier".

Bill, how do you find the road noise from the Road 5 compared to (a) the Pirelli and (b) the PR4?

Personally I reckon they are noisier than the PR4, but I do like the way they feel in the twisties so I'm willing to live with it.

I'd agree.  I only did about 18 kays today, but thought they were noisier than I remember the PR4s being.  I was starting to think the bike has some accoustic oddity, because I suffered a horrible high pitched whine from the Pirellis.  These have a lower-pitched sound closer to a "road rumble".

Tyre noise?  Can't say I've noticed any.  But that could be due to my poor hearing, helmet wind noise and (albeit little) exhaust noise (with OEM pipes).  Now with the Delkevic pipes, I certainly won't notice any.
