Touring Essentials
« on: December 04, 2013, 09:32:52 PM »
Ever left that essential but rarely needed item at home when touring, we have  :||||  :||||

So I would like to commence this post with the view of establishing a Touring and Travel essential checklist that we can collate into a simple single page document that can be printed off to allow a member to tick off those essential travel items  :whistle

So if everyone could add even just one (more if you like) SERIOUS item to the list below to allow me to collate the checklist and make it accessible for all, I will aim for completion just prior to National Rally 2014

Thanks for your thoughts  :think1

On a very long ride - a spare key - kept separate from the primary one in use. If you're riding in a group - swap the spares amongst your companions. Otherwise it might take a while for the spare to be mailed to you, or you might be waiting for an unimpressed spouse to deliver it to you personally.

If coming from W.A., a copy of rego papers since we don't have rego disks over here.

Not a good idea to keep them with the bike especially if it gets stolen. Plus police nation wide know your rego details from the plate number before they stop you.

What I can up with is "generally it's something you haven't needed on previous trips and you leave it home""

But loo paper or baby wipes (better) come to mind.....Sorry girls but there times when you simply have to go and the nearest loo is 50 kms away.
Insect repellent........though the last time I used it the flies weren't told that it was supposed to repel them instead of nearly carrying me away.
Hair Brush........There's one in the bike at all times so Heather can do her hair after taking helmet off.
Pens.........I keep one in the bike for mileage details on fuel docket.
Cig lighter/matches......if you need a camp fire.

A laminated card with 3 emergency family/friends contact numbers and address in your wallet/purse.

This does assist Emergency Services, when or if, the situation arises.

Mobile phones can be damage/lost/flat battery etc when when involved in an accident/incident.

My late brother always carried a laminated card and I got that call you dont want last year.

I stuff all of my clothing in a small sleeping bag "compression bag" and crank the bag up tight to reduce volume.  I also use this bag as my pillow.

Goes without saying Well stocked Tool Kit I tend to use multitools. No where near as good as a regular tool, but heaps better at reducing space and weight.
Also Duct Tape and a small can of WD40 which can be used to light fires in wet conditions.

I acknowledge hardworking Australians no matter who they are or where they come from. All those who have contributed to this wonderful country deserve an equal share of gratitude for their contributions. To single any group of individuals out for special homage only denigrates the rest of us.

Matchless fire lighter kit. I will post pic later.  And 10cent coin to open the tin.

Has flint, striker tinder and hexamine tablet to get the fire started. I happen to have about 20 in a big bag if any WA ites want one, I could send some East by pony express if some is going that way with a bit of spare room..

Reliable tyre pressure gauge.
Ya can't trust the Servos' gauges.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott
