Let's see what the popular method for maintaining speed is for these beautiful long distance beasts.
I reckon this poll will be close to a dead heat with riders preferring/affording all of the above methods.
Vote now.

Would love a CC, but have to settle for wrist action
-
Would love a CC but will probably settle for a throttle lock, a had one on my old XS1100 and it did the job.

What he said :beer
I'd even go for one of Murph's kits, 'cause the old wrist aint gettin' any younger

I have this one which I had to get from the USA.
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/vista-cruise-cruise-control-honda-models-dual-cable-and-pre-1982-kawasaki-with-78-inch-bars/part/VC-07-4045
I had one many years ago on a sadly missed CX500 Turbo. My local Honda dealer back then (15 years ago) had them for sale but could find anything like that in Adelaide 5 years ago.
Being a throttle lock it does do what it's designed to do. I use it all the time and I would say that fuel consumption is better. You need to keep an eye on your speed as the throttle is locked (but you can still move the grip) at what ever speed you were doing at the time. But your speed varies depending on the gradients of the road.
It's not perfect but it's better than nothing especially when touring as you can have your right hand resting on the throttle most of the time. It's a simple matter to unlock it when you get to a town as well.
I do remove it when the bike goes in the shop just in case an inexperenced person has to test the bike on the road.
My preference is for a CC but I have never been able to afford the cost plus installation. I often wonder why Honda never had this as an option for the ST.

Hi everyone, I have used a throttle lock for the past 50,000km or so ...set on soft. By soft I mean that I have set the tension screw so that it will creep back over a short time. The main aim was to decrease wrist soreness, and to allow me to wave to my many admirers in a trully regal fashion, and for also knowing that if I fall asleep, I will only crash at a slow speed.... Just kidding :grin
I do find it invaluable to just rest the throttle wrist for a short period.

Carrelli
Couldn't agree more Carrelli. On my recent SS1600 Ironbutt attempt, a gave credit to some of the things that helped me stay alert, fresh and pain free, and the cruise control was one of those things. I said that it stopped my hand being tethered to the handlebars for 24 hrs straight.
Another thing (for the record) was my highway pegs that allowed me to move about a lot and change position regularly.
Cheers, Diesel

I installed a Kaoko Throttle Lock that I had sent out from the States. It works perfectly but in all honesty I seldom use it. If we had longer, straighter roads here in Tassie then I'd probably get more use from it. :thumbsup
-
I'm using the Vista Cruise that I had on my BlackBird that I had on my CBR1000 must be 15 years old Still works fine

I've looked at those Highway pegs I've tried to put my feet in the position they would be in if I had them they look uncomfortable to me

Same here, you just gotta love things that work. Hmmmmm 2 in the morning, throttle lock on and tapping out some tunes on the tank bag :thumbsup Yeah I know?????? Yeap, just push the thumb down and you can do all kind of things with your right hand as you cruise down the road :whistle

Wouldn't he lose his balance? :crackup :rofl

On a serious note, I have Oxford hand warmers on my bars which add a certain amount of thickness to the bit I hang on to. Would the Vista cruise control fit over them?
-
Have a good look at the photo from SCARP. The throttle lock takes up no room and takes bugger all room to operate
-
Just grabbed me a spare. No electronics, no vacuum just works all the time http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ST-1100-Honda-ST1100-SOR-S-O-R-cruise-control-throttle-lock-mcvico-/220909044994?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item336f348502
Hmmm and you can do things with your right hand like ??????????????? Bloody sickos, I was thinking like ???????????

I have a throttle lock on the big11
I have no idea which brand it is or anything as it was on the bike when I got it :grin
Its just added on the end of the grip and just takes a twist to tighten/loosen
I was tightening it one day as I was riding and a cop driving the other way flashed his lights at me, he must have thought I was twisting the throttle :law
But yeah it works well... although cruse control would rock :thumb
-
I bought a Kaoka Throttle Lock a little while back, but with heated grips fitted, it looks like it's too much trouble to fit it. I had hoped that the bar end weight would come off and the lock fit in it's place. Unfortunately, it's not that easy.
-
So simple I like it.
That will do it for me :thumbs

"SPOT ON" Its the simple things that work, not the U-beut electronic crap that always seems to break down when you really need it

Bunnings looks like an electrical tie ,,... that 'll do the job

I got one of those from the States for my ST1100. They're called a Throttlemeister. It was on it when I sold it, and I have a suspicion it's the ST that Pete54 has (as well as his later purchased ST1300).
The last time Plod flashed headlights at me he did a U'ey and gave me a $200 Performance Award! :'(
-
Well I just fitted my cruise control today and after having owned the throttlemiester and having used a vista joby, i much prefer my Cruise control IMO. Whilst they quite pricey, I have found it to be really great quality and works well. cant wait to give it a real good test :-)
-
I have the throttlemiser on my 1300 and it work well. Would of liked the cc, but it is a lot of money and this works and looks good :blk13
-
I use McCruise cruise control for the open roads and a throttle rocker for the 60-80km zones
-
Never tried any of them, I might try one of those wrist rest things one day.

Does anyone have, or know anything good or bad about, the "Breakaway Motorcycle Cruise Control" (http://www.brakeawayproducts.com/pdf/5CP02.pdf (http://www.brakeawayproducts.com/pdf/5CP02.pdf)). Is it any better or worse than the NEP one, which I've not actually seen in action? Advice would be appreciated, 'cause if what I read about the next annual shindig being in Victor Harbour is true, then a throttle lock or cruise control is going to be a must if I'm ever to move my right wrist again!! :eek

Wow. Some interesting versions of the throttle lock there. I used one for a while but found it encroached on the handgrip and slipped pretty badly. It's now on a shelf in the shed. I like the look of the NEP one. Appeared to have a good solid locking mechanism, and thin to boot.
-
Here's the cheapest throttle lock that you will find, which some saw on my bike at Blackheath. It works a treat. Wrap the largest cable tie that you can find around the throttle grip as shown in the photo, and do it up just tight enough to be a sliding fit around the grip. With the throttle in a cruising position, the cable tie can be rotated around the throttle grip with your right index finger to rest on the brake lever, holding the throttle in a set position. When you manually roll off the throttle, the cable tie slips around on the throttle grip and "unapplies" the lock. Dead easy, and costs around 50 cents. :thumb
-
Bugger............why didn't I think of that!! They don't come much cheaper than that Stinky Pete!!
But you should have done it in black!!

The white one was free :) I would have had to pay for a black one :'(

I can't argue with that!!

The NEP type was on the bike when I bought it. Don't use it much but it works ok, and don't forget they are adjustable with the small Allen screw in the front. :bl11

I have the NEP on mine, still haven't tried it yet, absolutely pissing down in Sydney at the moment. :cuss

So, where can I get an NEP type throttle lock from? anyone any ideas?

Terry D J you ARE SICK you and Dick from the rally !!
now to the post
I bought 8 of these vista locks
have been told by acquaintances that they are illegal.
that said i have 3 fitted NOW
1 x cx650
1 x Black st1100
1 x Gold 50th st1100
did give the others away to needy friends
these work a treat
if you can relax your right wrist for only 10% oft the riding time it equates to a SUBSTANTIAL wrist saving,
on the ride home from Newcastle with GOLDIE, the cc let me comfortably ride without wrist pain,
cant say the same for the old bum
wow what a bummer that is
i need a survey on what seat comforter i NEED to buy

forget it Whizz TOO complicated for a throttle lock
in that regard the vista is king
cheep and simple

Harrieg,
My stategy for dealing with bum pain is twofold. First, I've flattened out my seat by setting the front on the middle height setting, and then forcing the rear into the lowest setting. This makes a significant improvement to comfort. My second strategy is to regularly shift position. I'll shift to one side and hang one bum bone off the edge of the seat for a couple of kilometers, and then do the same on the opposite side. You can actually feel the circulation return to the nether regions. I also change the postition of my feet on the pegs. Using those stategies, and a throttle lock, I can go up to 300km without the need for a break.
What's a Vista Lock?

please note ALL MEMBERS and stinky
harie is HARIE one R no Y
now to the post
yes stinky i do those steps to, looking for some highway blades as well, and probably will get a seat of some sort, Air hawk or Comfort Max
the throttle locks all follow a very similar style, see the VID further back in the post,
that is the type / one i have been using on a long run.
after the clutch problem probably need fixing i am setting up my single seat and cowl and top-box, so now would be the time to modify the seat padding YES ?

Woops! :-[ Sorry.
-
sorry Stinky, i forgot to add
on the 2 days ride from Newcastle, about 400 Ks each day, i had NO PAIN or problems with
legs, feet, back, neck, arms, wrists, cold, rain or fog, and was able to stay focused, alert and very good concentration
the bum was the ONLY part that gave me grief.
-
Harry, get an Air Hawk and pump it up as much as you can. Your bum wont feel the seat then :thumb
-
thanx Pete
already buying Stinky's will get it early next week

OH I forgot to list Shoulders, knees and ankles
-
As I have more birthdays, I find that the list of bits that ache after a long day in the saddle gets longer.
-
Why are you selling your Airhawk, Pete?
-
I actually found the Airhawk to be uncomfortable, restrictive, didn't like the "squishy" feel, or the extra height that it added to the seat. Others find them to be excellent, but not me. I have since developed other strategies to deal with "bot rot" on long hauls, including a top quality sheepskin cover, tilting the OEM seat back a little on it's mounts, and a range of changes to my seating position to return circulation to my arse cheeks.
-
After using thumb locks, throttle locks and all other variations installed a Mccruise best $900 ever spent will never go back to an alternative :thumbsup :thumbsup
