Title: 2018 National Rally Location poll
Post by: ST2UP on April 08, 2015, 08:52:00 AM
There has been some discussion on the forum recently and behind the scenes about future NatRally Locations which is fantasmigorical to see  ;-*

The OzSTOC Leadership team are constantly chatting behind the scenes about NatRally locations each year, but rest assured its a decision made with loads of research into all manner of criteria for a NatRally location, its not just pick a spot on the map  :wink1

When looking at the options above and making your selection (and the final choice may not be here) rest assured that the time of year and actual venue location can vary greatly even within that state......we are not planning a NatRally in Feb in FNQ wet season just like we wont put one in a Tassie winter etc. (I live at 1350 mtrs and think your all soft  :nahnah)

Here is the previous years NatRally States/Dates and Locations to help with your decision:

2012 - March - NSW, Blackheath
2013 - March - SA, Middelton
2014 - March - Vic, Ballarat
2015 - March - QLD, Toowoomba
2016 - March - WA, Perth (northwest)  (11-13th March)
2017 - October - NSW, Ha!! nearly got me  :p   (20-22nd Oct)
2018 - ??????????????

The leadership team does have a 2018 plan, BUT we really would like to hear your opinions.......and you may well change our view  ;-*

Our focus when making any OzSTOC choices always comes down to "the most good for the most amount of members"  ;-*

Lets vote and PLEASE post a comment if you wish for us to consider :-++ :-++

Alice Springs has airport ten Ks from town for those that don't want to ride all the way with access to taxis and shuttle buses. some great rides like Ross  River and Glen Helen and out to Standley Chasm just for starters

I chose Tas because a) I have not been there, b) it has not had a Nat Rally, and c)I hear really Really REALLY good things about Tas and bikes.

Tassie sounds good but I think members will go wherever it is held.
But I really dont wont to think that far ahead.

Having done the horrible boat ride to Tassie i wouldn't do it again. Feb is the only month to go there and it is premium price then for that reason. I will just look at my photo's and think of you all.
Alice Springs would be great in about August. :13Candy

Same reasons for me.
2019 in NT for the same reason followed by FNQ in 2020.

Thank you for your feedback and votes everyone, keep them coming. As Chris said he and SAAZ, StinkyPete and I consider so many things with Rally destinations. Diesel and Streak also put loads of effort into site selection.

But as the club grows so do our considerations, here's just one to consider based on some comments from above.

NSW is in October 2017, and as mentioned above Feburary is the time to see Tassie, but the ferry cost may be prohibitive to some, even many and it's only 12 to 15 weeks after 2017 Rally  :think1

So this could negatively effect both Rallies do you think  :popcorn

Love the idea sharing guys, keep going.

Be interesting to see if the ferry will do a volume discount.

They are for the 2016 Ulysses AGM in Launceston . . . However we are talking about thousands of bikes for that . . But I'm sure they might do a deal if we were to say we are making a choice between say Qld and Tassie . . If you gave our members a fare discount, it may sway them to pick Tassie . . . Or something along those lines . . .

NSW is in October 2017,

Why does Tas have to be in Feb 2018, why not November or early December and avoid the school holiday price hike and is just a year after NSW. That is if Tas is chosen 2018

I believe that Feb/march are the driest months down there?

Doesn't have to be in Feburary at all, I was just using the information in the thread above and from those who have travelled and lived in Tasmania, just listening to the locals  ;-*

They do, but it's still a lot of money, especially if you want a bed rather than a chair to sleep in.

I did a rough quote for bike plus trailer and two people ( no cabin) and came up with under $500 for the return trip

Rode (and ferried) over for the Ulysses AGM held in Ulverstone in 2006. Did the night crossing and Shared a 4 berth cabin with some friends. All good, a good nights sleep.

Spent a week at the AGM, toured the North West of Tassie , Stanley (The Nut), Smithton, Burnie and around Devenport and Launceston.

After the AGM, rode South via some great mountain roads thru Cressy, Poatina, around The Great Lake, Bothwell, Bridgewater (not down the flat middle) to stay with friends near Huonville, used this as a base to go East to see places like Port Arthur and surrounds, South to Geeveston, Dover Southport, Bruny Island, Cygnet, Snug, Mt Wellington . . All great riding.

Left Huonville to go West to Hamilton, Derwent Bridge, Lake St Clair, Queenstown, Strahan . . Where we did a Harbour Cruise out to Hell's Gate, saw Salmon Farms, stopped for a tour of Sarah Island and then part way up the Gordon River . . A great cruise, thoroughly recommended.

On up thru Zeehan, Rosebery, Cradle Mtn, Dove Lake, Mole Creek, Sheffield and on to the Ferry at Devonport.

A great time, many things to see, some fantastic roads to ride.

Have been back a couple of times since, tried the day passage, cheaper but so boring and around lunch time was looking for a bench to lay on and nap . . Recommend the extra dollars to share a 2 or 4 berth cabin.

Thanks for your interest and votes on this proposal......we have had 42 members contribute at this stage.  :like but still amble room for more participation please  :-++

The poll does give some insight into what the membership wants, but obviously we look at this decision from a holistic view point  ;-*

The ingredients to a succesfull NatRally are numerous, venue, local facilities, service clubs, riding routes, weather predictions, school holidays, other large functions in the area all play a role......but the single biggest essential component is having a local organising team in place capable of putting all of this in play, this was the major reason behind previous NatRally locations and as we grow in NatRally attendance numbers this becomes more relevant.

Motorbike with sidecar or trailer   $81 and Shared Berth  $129  each way ($420 - return) so even that is doable for most of us......with a little advanced savings.

Maybe people could start a separate savings account called the Ozstoc Tassie trip and over the 3 years it will grow substantially if they put in 10 bucks a week.

$10 x 52 weeks = 520
$520 x 3 years = $1560.
$1560 x Tassie = great time!

if you could stretch to $15 a week then it makes a whopping $2300 for the trip.

Cool!

If you come to Tasmania I'll have a distillery in Devonport for you to visit, there'll be another 2 new distilleries in Launceston plus another just 20minutes north of Launceston and the big one at Burnie. No shortage of reasons to explore the north of the state :)

Then there's a trail of distilleries as you work your way down south no matter if you choose the east coast, midlands or west coast routes.

I sold my ride to help fund my distillery project.
Come visit the whisky isle of the south, start saving at the cost of a pack of smokes a week and you'll have yourselves a lifetime of memories down here.

Cheers,

Mech.

How do I choose? Tasmania is motorcycling nirvana enough said! FNQ in winter is pretty attractive & for me from SEQ is easy & affordable, NT - Ayers Rock would be good in winter & has an Airport + great resort, what about Darwin I last rode there in August 1981 so a lot would have changed? All that matters is were gonna ride! :blu13

South Australia Or Victoria, Nothing against Tas I just think the ferry cost will put a lot of people off and therefore the numbers will be small making it no so much worthwhile (Sorry Tas) Mainland Australia will see maximum members attending.

OK I'll shut up now.

Have to agree Sabie, some of us who were looking at attending the 2016 Ulysses AGM looked at the cost of not only attending the AGM, but adding a week of touring Tassie and the rough cost, including night ferry and shared cabin, was close to $2,000 each, this included pretty much all costs with a generous allowance for accommodation, food, drink, touristy stuff and the return boat crossing with bike and trailer and a shared o'night cabin  . . So we decided to put this money towards driving to the tip of Cape York instead . .  I should add that we all have been to Tassie at least 3 times before

I've never ridden in Tassie and have only ever heard good things about it. So I'm keen to go there. Though having said that I'm hoping to get there before 2018 too. So I don't really mind where the 2018 Nat Rally ends up and didn't vote for a state accordingly.
