A couple of weeks ago I developed a sore neck so I went to the doc and he reckoned it was swelling so gave me painkillers and put me on a course of acupuncture. (This didn't really fix me up)
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160730/6ec90ccaa469ef80552bd02a4e7f62b0.jpg) (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160730/337c59b2d8c8de4751229c605cbae140.jpg)
About a week ago I was using my right arm to push myself up out of bed and was struck by a pain through the shoulder into the base of my neck (OUCH) :eek
Ever since then I have had intermittent pain shooting through my shoulder and right arm (quite painful and can be brought on by any movement I make even just walking :||||)
Oh and the neck pain has also gotten worse :fp
So the doc sent me to get an MRI (I only just fit in the damn little tube >:())
Anyway the results have come in...
Large Syringohydromyelia at C6/7
(Syringohydromyelia is a disorder in which a cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, can expand and elongate over time, destroying the spinal cord. The damage may result in pain, paralysis, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, and extremities.)
The doc has referred me to a neurosurgeon at the Hospital and I am waiting to hear from them :well :well :well
So as a result of this I'm not riding the bike (Well I have ridden twice during these 2 weeks, just down the road and back... So hard to stop riding :'() and I'm off work until this is fixed.
Anyway I just thought I'd let my OzSTOC family know whats going on with me and why I won't be seen out on the bike for a while.
Cheers
Shiney

I just hope to get in to see the neurosurgeon sometime soon so I can find out what he recommends as the fix.

Reading the Wikipedia entry, it seems surgery will be required, but the success rate appears to be very good.
Looks like it needs attention sooner rather than later.

That is my understanding also :think1 :think1 :think1
I would just like to hear from a specialist as to how bad a "Large Syringohydromyelia" actually is and how soon the operation needs to be done. (The possibility of the spinal cord being destroyed and/or paralysis has me a little concerned >:())
As you said it appears that surgery ultimately has to be done so it would also be nice to know how soon this can be done and how soon I can go back to work (or more importantly how soon I can get back on the bike :thumb)

Geez mate, don't do things by halves. All the best and a speedy recovery.
I might have to break my "no more bikes" rule and take yours for a spin. :grin

Best Wishes for a speedy resolution Shiney. I am constantly amazed at the wonderful progress being made in medicine these days, whereby unidentified problems that would have caused serious harm a few decades ago can now be promptly found and successfully cured. We live in a country where top class medical care is available to everyone. You and Carol are in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm fairly optimistic towards a positive outcome, as you say we have brilliant medical services in Australia and the advancements keep coming. (apparently the operation is now keyhole surgery which has reduced the risks quite a lot :thumbsup)

:crackup :rofl :crackup :rofl I just looked at the acupuncture pictures again... I really don't look happy about having 3" needles in my head :rofl
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160730/337c59b2d8c8de4751229c605cbae140.jpg)
It really didn't hurt or even annoy me but :think1 I may have been in a bit of pain at the time of the picture (Pain makes me unhappy so that was likely the reason :wink1)
Oh and I managed 4 hours sleep last night (the painkillers have doubled the amount of sleep I'm getting :thumbsup)

I jus thought 'no one likes to come 4th' missing a podium finish ..........no one should or need to be in pain on a daily basis, I hope your wait for relief is brief and the surgery is a once in your lifetime requirement. Cheers Brian (ORSM)

Hey Shiney.
Hang in there bud in 2007 I had c5/c6 replaced then in 2012 they did c6/c7
C5/c6 herniated and crushed my spinal cord nearly paralising me
I haven't looked back since it is amazing what these surgeons can do
In 2007 after surgery it was 4weeks flat on my back all up 12 weeks before back to full duty
The advance by 2012 was in hospital 22hrs. Back to full duty in 3 weeks and when I left hospital they said I could ride my bike as soon as I was comfortable wearing my helmet I rode the bike before I Went back to work
Peter
ps. Your symptoms sound Identical to mine
-
Heaps of sympathy mate. Kate says she has a small inkling of how you might be feeling. She hopes that you may have been prescribed Lyrica, as it was about the only thing that helped her with her nerve pain.
Best wishes and we have our fingers crossed for a successful outcome. John & Kate.

I'm glad the hear that surgery can be a fairly quick recovery time and that was back in 2012, so it might be even faster now days :thumbsup

I have indeed been prescribed Lyrica and have found it to be very helpful :thumbs
It's funny that you say that "Kate says she has a small inkling of how you might be feeling" because I was thinking that I now had a small inkling of how she must have been feeling.

Well here's hoping that you have a resolution as successful as Kate's has been. It’s amazing what they can fix these days.

Shiney.... just a little op, then you'll be all good... from the time I collected Kate from the hospital, until she felt comfortable on the back of Scarlett... about 6 weeks :cuss :cuss
Maybe it was because it was Kate's lower back, it may not take you so long. Well here's hoping anyway.
When it comes to selecting a great spinal surgeon... and all round good bloke... Dr Paul Licina from Spine Plus at the Bne Private Hospital, did a great job for Kate and she wouldn't hesitate to go back to him. Hope this helps. John & Kate.

Hope all goes well , I know what it's like to have neck pain I recently had a nerve block injected into my neck at c3 to stop the neck pain , headaches and pain down both arms , if this doesn't hold then the only option is to have the vertebra fused, so all the best and here's to a good result .

It's about time I updated everyone...
A few weeks ago I woke up with no pain :rockon but this was a bit of a worry for me :think1 :think1 why would the pain just suddenly disappear (I thought something bad might be happening >:())
So off to the doc, he said I should just continue to take it easy and wait for the hospital to fit me in :fp
Well I got sick of waiting and asked for referrals to a few specialists (I eventually found one on the list that could fit me in :phone)
I went over everything with him and he reckons that I have most likely had the Syringohydromyelia since birth and that the pain was caused by a musculoskeletal injury :eek anyway he said that I could now return to work :thumbs
So today was my first day back and I'm feeling like my old self again :runyay
(That being said I'm still on the waiting list at the hospital as I want a second opinion just in case the first specialist is wrong... the risks are just too high to rely on one guys reckoning >:())
Anyway that's where I'm finding myself at this point in time, hoping everything stays fine :thumbsup
Cheers
