Took my ST1100 for a short ride this afternoon, it was going really well, however 5 ks from home the clutch seemed to slip now and then and a few “noises” from the clutch/gearbox area.
I pulled into the drive, into neutral, handbrake on and opened garage door, back on bike, selected 1st and let the clutch out . . Nothing . . Tried going into all/any gear . . Same result . . Nothing.
Thinking gear selector problems, under the bike, gear linkage all good. So I am thinking either the clutch has completly disintergrated and providing absolutely no drive to gearbox or internal gear selector yokes or connectors have failed.
Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong?

Drop the clutch cover off and see if clutch is as it should be.

.try opening the clutch bleed valve, and see if it relieves the pressure

Very strange . . . I got the 1100 up on center stand and without engine running, went thru each gear and each engaged . . Didn’t two weeks ago! Started it up and gears engaged. Did not go for a ride as I will change oil n filter . . May have put in friction modified oil last time, doubt it but possible. Also from pads seem to be sticking, so I will pull apart and check them out . .
Anyway very happy that it is not the gearbox or selectors, but could still be a problem with the clutch, will do some more testing . .

That definitely sounds like the clutch slave cylinder is holding pressure. It may be worth at least bleeding the clutch system, there may be some very old gluey fliud in there.

Thanks Brock, I’ll check it out next weekend, hopefully that is all it is. I serviced the master cylinder a couple of years ago so maybe it is the slaves turn. I will check out the front brake pads at the same time . .

If you had used fricyion modified oil, then you will have clutch slip , only fix for that is new clutch plates.

I’ll do some more testing. I bought a complete clutch reconditioning kit about 12 years ago, so they are sitting in the garage awaiting the call to duty . .

I used the wrong oil in my Yammie XJR1300, and buggered the clutch. The dealer fixed it my removing the clutch plates and giving them a thorough clean with solvent, and putting in fresh oil. ++

I had a car with a slipping clutch, but only when warmed up.
The plates were too thin, and that is why the clutch worked when cold. As the plates heat they slip more.
Any slip creates heat, and then it becomes a self perpetuating.

I suspect that is exactly what is happening with my bike.
It started life as a Police Escort bike . . Slow parades etc where a lot of clutch slipping was normal . . Clutch has been suspect for many years . . The reason I bought a clutch replacement kit many years ago . . Not looking fwd to the job though . .
