2017-06-26 Failed Speedo Drive and Cable
« on: June 26, 2017, 04:02:34 PM »
Just after getting back home from Port Pirie a few weeks ago I noticed the bike's speedo wasn't working

I ordered a new cable which arrived this morning and while doing the new screen decided to fit this as well.

The old cable was removed and unlike the new one wouldn't turn inside the cable housing. I can't work that one out yet but I decided to check the cable drive gear and that too wasn't turning.

All I can conclude is that somehow the cable stopped turning and caused the teeth on speedo gear dive to fail. When I do a front tyre change over I normally give the inside of the speedo drive gear housing a smear of grease before putting it back on the axle.

Now I have to order part number 44800-ML7-691 which is around the $105 mark. New cable is installed

but until I can get the other part ordered and paid for I will still need to use this one on my phone when I need to leave our home town.

Mornin' Alan et al...

Quite possibly, but also consider that if the inner drive cable has seized within the outer cable and as the contact of the worm drive gears within the front wheel is considerable. Then it's possible that the 2 tangs on coupling that pick up the drive for the worm gears, may have been forced to splay outwards and disengaged from their reassess and thus provide no drive (wont turn).

If so, it may just need the tangs to be bend to their orginal position.

Just a thought.

Cheers the can:-)

After a little exploring in the guts of the speedo drive gear the cost of fixing will be somewhat less; $25 says the dealer I go through at Port Augusta. Put it all back together so I can still use the bike in the meantime.

The rest of the housing and included worm drive for the gear is ok

The gear retainer on the wheel looks ok as far as I can tell though the focus isn't the best.

Well clearly the tangs on the driver collar won that one :'(

As a thought (if you haven't already put it back together again), would be to shape two more indents into that nylon gear collar at 90 degrees to the broken out pieces, then it would be a blind alignment to pick up the tangs to enguage the two new cut-outs in order for the worm and gear to again drive the new cable.

Would be easily assesed as a working fix, or otherwise, by rotating the speedo dive gearbox (for want of a better discription), around the wheel hub prior to returning the wheel into the stanchions, to see if the drive is working.

Worth I consideration I would think as there seems to be plenty of remaining gear skirt to work with.

Cheers the can :-)

The doc wanted me to have one of those bone scan things done and the appointment was for today. I rang the bike shop on Tuesday to find out if the parts I needed had arrived; they had and I advised that I'd pick them up today since I would be halfway there because of the medical appointment at Booleroo Centre.

Total cost $AUD36 - They should get fitted If the rain stays away over the weekend.

Worked on getting the new drive gear in this afternoon.

Cleaned out the housing to remove as much as I could of the old grease and covered the internals with some high temp CV joint wheel bearing grease.

Made sure everything worked as it should before securing wheel in place. Moved the bike from the back yard to the front yard via the side gate access to the road; speedo indicated up to about 20 k/h.

Removed the oil cap and the old O ring just sat on the cam cover which made it an easy fix to insert the new one in place. Can't complain after 200,000 km.

Speedo has been working fine since I did the fix but I did notice a change in the reading.

We went to Port Pirie today and I compared the GPS speed to the bike's speedo. An indicated 100 k/h showed 98/99 k/h on the sat nav and fairly consistent difference throughout the 60 - 110 k/h range. Within a 4 k/h difference below 50 though.

The sat nav did have an update to the navigation side of the software so it could just that which has changed. I still have the GPS speedo on the phone and with a ride to Snowtown for a job interview on the 31st I'll do another comparison then.

Was the speedo working this close to real speed before the replacement?   The 1300 is 8 km out at highway speed

No; an indicated 100 would be around 94 on the sat nav. At first I thought it might be the new Dunlop tyre but that was on before the speedo failed.

The only other thing I can think of is the speedo drive gear as they are different between the 1100 and 1100A due to the tyre size difference.

The speed reading might have changed but the odometer is on par with other trips over there.
