Sure can, a Repco RF135 works fine, and only about $8.00. For oil Penrite HPR15 a 15-40 Diesel oil semi synthetic. The bike runs a lot smoother, and no clunk going in to 2th when cold.

All up cost about $40.00, a lot less than Honda oil and filter.

Also Ryco Z436 and valvoline VO33 work.  Here is one discussion on oil. You don't have to spend a fortune to get good oil and filters.  The original Honda recommendation is for an average 10W-40 (Honda oil). The ST engines are very easy on oil relatively for bike engines, so it is not something to lose too much sleep over.

For oil in my  :bl11 I use whatever I can buy at as low a price as I can afford.

I've used Black & Gold ( still meets Honda requirements), shell advance 4T (for bikes), shell helix ultra ( in bike now as I sold the car), I've also had Mobil and Castrol.
Also changed oil/filter every 12000 kms (as in manual) and only missed once.

I get filters from Ebay and for a three pack it costs about $AU35.00 or about the same as one from a Honda Dealer.

Yeah, I put diesel in mine last change.

So far I haven't really noticed and difference but it's a 1300 and only got 28,000 on the clock. I have noticed, when checking thru the viewing window, that the oil seems a lot dirtier than it was with normal oil and as someone said, diesel oils have more detergents in them and maybe it's doing its job and giving the motor a clean-out.

I may go back to normal oil at the next change, to see if I can notice any difference, and then maybe put diesel in every third or fourth change just to give it a clean-out. Don't know yet, still thinking. :think1

Take care all,

Well took the advice of the team and got me a Ryco filter and Penrite HPR 15 diesel semi syn and changed the oil bike now at 112000kms and so I did a ride this afternoon to Boddington and back home to give the old girl a good run

My feelings with the Penrite HPR 15 is I must say seems to be smoother in up change and down in the gears it's not in my head it's real and idle seems less noise maybe cause of the 50 weight thicker oil at temp

I guess the big test is Winter cold mornings

Thanks guys for the advice a real help and cheaper than Honda  :thumb

I have used 15W-xx oils in Canberra winters at -10c so depends how cold it gets.  Worked just fine.  I did use a 20W-50 I had lying around and it definitely took a while to warm up to free up the gearbox in -5c conditions.

G'day, I also have a 2000 ex-cop ST11!   :wht11

There is another thread going which is all about oil - but with an oil expert, rocketeer, running the show so it's not the usual nonsense.  It's worth a look if you are interested.

Using diesel oil is nothing new, the Yanks have been using stuff called Shell Rotella for ages (so I have seen on other forums).

And yes some of us are trying a diesel oil. We have a new member who is in the oil game, and there is an interesting thread on oil in the oil section.

And welcome.

Where are you from?

Queensland........................ No, I'm on Brocks side. Leave him alone. Brock would have got there first but we're several hours behind you here in the West.

Ah OK then, I've got some bananas to bend anyway.

If you're happy using Castrol 20W 50 oil (and I am), then it's on sale at Aldi from Saturday 27th April for $20.
