This seems to be still current.  Might get someone out of trouble (sorry Pete but I only just came across it)

No apology needed.  My problem is fixed, and if the combined resources of the various ST forums can come up with a better solution than replacing the entire mechanism, that's great.   While my mechanical abilities are quite limited, with the precise instructions provided, I guess Blind Freddie could replace the stripped gear and clean-up the tracks.  Now, we just have to figure out how to get a bulk order for around ten gears shipped to Oz, which can be on-sold to OzSTOC members who's mechanisms have failed.

You sell yourself short there Pete.

My new toy has not failed YET, but I'm in for a group buy, for when that day does come.

It could be that putting in the new gears might save having the mechanism fail in the future.  It would be interesting to find out at what age/distance failures occur, and if bigger aftermarket screens are an issue.  If they make it in chrome Shiney might even fit it!!  but it can't be seen...

I'm guessing that that a regular strip, clean and regrease of the whole mechanism would perhaps prevent failure of the gear.  Perhaps every two or three years.  My new mechanism certainly runs smoother than the old, so it was probably a slow deterioration that went unnoticed.  However it may be that there is a mis-match between the metal of the gear, and the metal of the cables that it drives, which is one contributor to the issue.

Hello Australian STowners,
Now I know who Ned Kelly is (wikki) after answering that tricky bushwacker (ranger?) question.
To introduce myself ..I am ricke (warofman9) the maker of window mechanism replacement gears.
I have 8 gears left in this batch and would consider selling as a group buy with significant savings.
You guys throw it around and contact me off list to work something out.
Not sure if I am going to machine another batch this year.

I am keen to buy one as a group buy or singularly, evan though my bike is new you never know when something is going to brake
So my belief is grab it while you can

Well I made contact with Ricke and here is his reply

Leo,
Gear kits are $140 to the USA and $160 to Australia
In both cases I cover shipping  by US Post or I may look at methods.
I could package 4 for a small group buy for $560.... that would make it $140 / pc to you guys on the other side.
I get a savings on shipping... you get the USA price.

ricke (warofman9)

So I am prepared to go ahead and order 4 and go from there if others are keen
Ricke did say he had 8 if a few more come in
It doesn't matter who orders as long as I get one

I finally bit the bullet and pulled my windscreen assembly out today.  Found the gear in very poor condition.  The nylon in the cable was in very poor condition as well.  I thought the the nylon is probably the problem in the first place.  Expands when warm in an already tight fit tube.  My option, take the torch to it and melt the nylon out.  Result smoother operating of the cables particularly with new lube in the tube.  The screen again moves although the gear teeth favouring the left cable (I think it is the lower section of the gear) are in better condition than the right so it lowers on the left and not the right.  Both sides move  up with a little assistance.  I can at least move my screen again into a new position.  End result is that I know my motor and mechanism work fine.  I will have to source a replacement gear.  There is a bloke who machines alloy parts for race vehicles around the corner.  I'll take a gear in and see if a new one could be machined.  Should I get a good result from my local guy on the gear, I'll post up the details at the first opportunity.
Sincere regards,
Maxnettoz
