New owner seeking advice on aftermarket seats such as Corbin, Sargeant etc. We are doing long distance touring and wonder if these seats can be worth the money or whether we just stop more often?
I don’t mind spending the money if it is worth it but would feel awfully ripped off if I do spend it for no result.
Value your opinions.

I have a Sargent seat on my ST1300 and find it far better than the original. But it is a ST1100 so don't know what the Standard ST1100 seat is like

I had a Sargeant front and back on my ST300, and it was a vast improvement over the OEM. It was flatter and wider and also harder, but I coud sit for far longer than with teh original seat. The "Gold Standard" for long distance seats would be be Russel Daylong.

I have a Russel Daylong (RDL) on my ST1300, it provides support for the thighs, a lot more comfort for rider and pillion, and allows me / both of us to ride 800km / 400km days.
Not the bests pics, but probably good enough for you to see the difference between the standard and RDL.

Finally, for now, there's a guy in Goulburn NSW that does MJM seats. A number of mates swear by him, he could be worth a chat.

I tried most aftermarket seats for the 1100 and found if an upholsterer left 50mm and removed the excess it is far better than the aftermarkets, others who have tried it agree.
My recommendation is don't waste your money on these seats for the 1100

I had a puncture just up the road from there in 2017. It wasn't pluggable and I ended up at Warrnambool getting a new tyre.

I had a seat made by metcruz seats in Dubbo for my st1100 a big improvement on standard seat & only cost $450.00 best money ever spent

I'm another one that tried a lot of seating options, airhawk, gel pads, corbin seat and a standard seat modified by an upholsterer (twice).
All of these options did improve the seat a little.
Then I was lucky enough to be able to try a ride on a mates Russel Daylong seat :-++
WOW, it was a dramatic improvement (I had heard they were an good but I was blown away by just how much better it was) :runyay
The RDL seat was more comfortable and I didn't experience any sore/pressure spots.
After a few hours I still needed a break but when I got back on it was like getting on the bike for the first time that day :thumbsup
So when I had saved up the money I brought my own Russel Daylong seats :grin
They are expensive at around $1000 for both front & rear seats but if you plan on riding your bike for some time to come it is well worth the money IMHO.
I've had mine for a few years now and still love them (The wife is also a big fan when riding pillion) :thumb

G'day Seadragonfoundry and welcome to OzSTOC from up near Mackay... we went a slightly cheaper route and used a local motor trimmer to re-sculpt/re-model and re-cover our STeed's seats... our usual riding style is 2-up/500kms per day, so if your butt starts getting sore after a coupla hundred k's, then it's going to be a long day... even with Air-Hawks, that was our problem.
So we went to our local auto/marine motor trimmer, said that we wanted about 20mm of the seating foam replaced with softer stuff, sculpt the riders seat to (feel like sitting on) a tractor-seat... and sculpt and re-form/build up the pillon's seat foam (takeaway some foam from the shoulder/inside thigh seat area)... "Yep, No Worries..."
It took a couple of goes (take it away, try it, bring it back and adjust it some more) and when we were happy with the final result/feel, we had the seats re-covered with a shark's skin type upholstery/seat cover... $250 all up... and we've got a 500km, all day comfy STeed.

Hi All... Just got in from work... I'll post some pics tomorrow.
The shark skin cover feels thinner, but more stretchy than OEM... It has more tooth/texture, so that even when wet, you don't slide around.
If you press down on the seat top, it's plushy/squidgy, instead of firm.
The shape and dimensions of the rider's seat is similar to OEM... The pillion's seat foam has been built up at the front and around the rear (kinda like a horse-riding saddle), with the front shoulders having been softened.
Neither seat appears to be any thicker then OEM, just much softer... We left our STeed with Dave Coburn Motor Trimmer and the work only took a couple of days... The OEM seat cover was refitted for each test ride, with the shark skin cover fitted after the final adjustment.

The seat foam replacement hasn't changed the appearance of either saddle very much... just a different surface texture.

Thanks Scarlett Thunderbolt 👍..that doesn’t look much different from OEM. Reason I asked was a photo would make if easier for a local trimmer if anyone wanted to alter their standard seat. I find the OEM seat with a sheep skin cover quite comfortable :like

Hi Guys, I had the OEM seat refoamed and recovered by an upholster when I as restoring the bike when I had first bought it. The seat was in pretty bad shape and vinyl was split. Maybe it was readjusted from OEM specifications accidently during the repair process with using softer foam and reshaping. with a lambs wool cover I have ridden 1100klm in one day and felt no issues with soreness or tiredness. Happy with the current seat.
