Jump start a ST1100?
« on: April 16, 2014, 11:50:47 AM »
There's been a while since I last rode my bike due to cylones and other commitments, 2 - 3 weeks, probably 3 - 4 weeks.  Battery died last night as I tried to start her.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't jump start her from my car?  Is the battery likely to then hold a charge after I've had a nice ride to charge it up or would I be best to just replace the battery with a new one?

Or would push starting be better than jump starting?  Don't think the missus will be too keen to assist, but I suppose I could ask.
At my age you realise something very important, then ten minutes later you've forgotten it.

I've jumped my 1300 before. I leave the leads on for a while, then removed the leads and started it, no problems

Have not tried to start while leads were attached though

Thank you all, didn't think there was anything electronic which could be fried but I'm a bit wary about jump starting anything these days.

How old is your battery? I had a battery for 5 years and it went flat a couple of times but only after not being started for several months but eventually it would no longer hold a charge.

There is no reason you can't jump start the bike using the car battery as they are both 12v but it is a lot of mucking around removing the plastic etc to get to the battery every time unless you put extra connections to the battery for easy access.

Some riders have a plug in charger so when the bike is not in use for some time, it can either be plugged into 240v or with solar panels stopping the need to remove the plastics.

Personally, if the battery is playing up on a regular basis, take it to Battery World, get them to test it for free and if needed, buy a new one.

Mine eventually gave up the ghost after 5 years of faithful service but let me down out in the middle of no where on the Ballarat run so I bought a knew  one for $106 from Battery World. All have only a 12 month warranty.

My riding partners were very pleased I did because most of the areas where they pushed started the bike was on flat level ground.

Poor batteries are not worth the trouble and it is great to hear the V4 burst into life first thing on a cold morning.

Jump away, it wont cause any problems.

A few of us have done a small mod to our bikes, to wire in a lead fitted with anderson plugs under the seat that allows a jumper lead to be plugged in.

I have found an Anderson plug fits very snug between battery and fuse block, also can be accessed without removing any thing.

Had a Win - Win last night.

Jump started the bike, that went smoothly.  And since she was running that was a great excuse to take her out for a long evening ride through the canefields to charge up the battery fully.  It's nice and handy that Honda put that strap down the outside of the battery on the positive terminal, made it really easy to connect the jumper cable there as the access to the positive terminal itself is a little restricted.

I was also taken with how sleek the bike looks without her panniers on.  As she was pannierless on one side, I took the other one off as well and walked around admiring her lines.

I'm taking her out on Friday morning, then have to leave her for a week as I cage up to Cairns for a break.  That will identify if it's the battery, will she start on Sunday 27th?

If it has been fully discharged it would be better to put it on a battery charger to gain maximum capacity of of it, as a good charger does different things to just running the bike.  I have push started the ST1100 (twice!), starts right away using second gear as long as there is enough power for the electronic ignition (ie some lights come on)

 Mornin' All...

While on batteries, ST numero uno of 17 years is still happy to start on its 2nd battery which is getting on itself now...my question without notice (coming into winter), is; has anyone used INOX MX2?

And if so, any thoughts on this product?

Cheers the can :-)

Hey there can, I use Inox and have done for years.
I would rate it as one of the best cleaner and lubes on the market and would take it over the standard CRC or WD40 any time.
It's a paraffin based lube and hold on longer than the petroleum based lubes.

INOX MX2 is a battery conditioner.  I have not used anything other than fully sealed batteries for quite a few years, so have not had the need to try it out.  last 'normal' battery that died in the Suzuki was so dead that it was hard work for it to fall off the bench onto the floor! so I did not try and recondition that one.

I have just looked up INOX MX2, it says its an additive for batteries, used in cars trucks Aircraft batteries.

In 40 Yrs of working with batteries, I have never heard of this stuff. Without trialling this in some batteries, I would not recommend putting anything in a battery except H2SO4 or distilled water, certainly not Cadmium Sulphate. As for putting it in Aircraft Batteries, never, unless specified by the manufacturer.

Arvo Chaps...Ta for the replies :thumb

Well Brock, consider moi' a willing guinea pig ...or my Taiwanese Yuasa lead acid battery of about 8years is anyway :eek

Had it go flat a few months back after the bike hadn't been started from about the same length of time...had to get my neighbour from over the back fence to help jump start it, coz bumping it was a dead lose (so speaks the man who has difficulties kick starting V-twins)...but I digress

Anyway, as I have volunteered to accompany me octogenarian Mate up to this Ulysses thingo in the Centre, and as I know it can get a tad chilly in the morn and challenge both my octogenarian riding companion and me equally old lead acid battery...I think (like the both of us), it could do with a pick-me-up  :wink1

So as the battery is still showing sings of life, I'll give it a go and see if I can get 10+ years out of it ;-*

Cheers the can :-)

Oops my bad you're right I'm thinking of MX3 lubricant.
I have had small dealings with the battery conditioner some years back and tried it myself. Personally I don't know that it provided any huge benefit and now after working with the battery industry I don't think you can do any better than good battery service and maintenance.
Batteries need to be maintained & charged properly or they sulphate up and that is what destroys your battery. Charging correctly is also very important so you don't buckle the lead plates.
The guys at stores like Battery World live and breath this stuff and are a wealth of knowledge if people would only ask.
Hope this helps.
Tom.

One of my many tasks over the last 40 yrs has been running Airforce battery shops, and now one at Jandakot airport. Aircraft batteries, Nicad and Lead Acid, I have learned a few things over the years, one of which is dont waste time trying to rejuvinate a battery, replace it. Its easier, and cheaper in the long run..

You may well be right :thumb...But here's a though...

I concede that I know very little about batteries and for that matter electrickery in general, but I have been of the belief that to maximise a lead acid battery life I should always keep the water / H2SO4 level to a point it covers the plates. That's what I was told, rightly or otherwise :think1.

OK. With that in mind, when I originally put this battery in it came out of its box MT and with a 6 cell cassette of fluid that I simply up-ended into the battery and in doing so 6 bottle cap like seals were pierced and all of the contents ended up in the battery before I fitted a collective cap which is clearly labelled Do Not Remove.

Today I did remove that collective cap this morning and not only did I add the 92ml of INOX MX2, but added an additional 30mls of DE-mineralised water in order to restore the fluid covered the plates in each of the cells..refitted the collective cap...and returned the battery to the bike.

Have I done the correct thing? Indeed will I get the 98% chance of adding 2-3 years life to the battery as INOX suggest? I dunno...  :o

I guess time will tell...I will let ya's know :thumb

Ciao, the can :-)

The battery is of the same style as mine, and is what is known as a low maintenance battery, not maintenance free. adding distilled water till the plates are covered by a couple of mil (or to the bottom of the slit tube if it has one) is all that is usually needed. water replaces the water that is converted to H2 and O2 during charging.

Formula time H2SO4+2(H20) +electricity => 2(H2) + O2+  H2SO4 .  The Acid is there to help the reaction with electricity

Here endeth the lesson..   o:) o:)

I dont know what INNOX MX2 will do for an old battery, but the blurb on it says adding to a new battery will extend its life
