Loose Nut

Loose nuts  :eek and a rubber with holes  :eek :eek :eek

All is good but check your axle nut cos this is what happens when it comes loose and you are in the middle of nowhere.  :well

50kms south of Coolgardie and I had to piliion in on Pezzz's STeed.  :grin Lucky there was no photos of that so I didn't happen  :fp

Its good to have a friend that will drive 400 Ks with a trailer to pick you up and take you the 400 Ks back home.

been there done that.
it looks a bit rusty and dry, might that have some bearing on what happened.

No bearing, what you see is moly 60 and iron filings. It looks dry but there are also aly filings, rubber bits and most of the thrust washer all mashed together. Sorry state of affairs  :grin
