Which Tyres
« on: September 09, 2014, 11:21:29 PM »
Looks like I am up for a new set of tyres already, I thought they would do Inverell but maybe not
All reports Michelin PR4 GT not available for months, PR3 not available anymore  :eek
Where do I go from here Bridgestone T30GT, Pirelli Angel GT or Dunlop Roadsmart 2
Or just park the bike till the Michelin come back into stock, At Jake Wilson they say back in stock on the 19th September
But thats probably a maybe also,
I spoke to Tyres for Bikes in Brisbane and Two wheel tyres at Blacksoil
Where does others get there tyres from in Toowoomba, Ipswich, Brisbane

I am still running a set of Angel GT on mine. They have been a good set of tyres as were the the PR3.  I will be looking for the PR4 as well when it is time to re shod the bike.

I am using the Pirelli Angel GT (A spec rear for heavier bikes) and find they are at least as good in all respects as the PR3s I had on before, which is praise indeed. If anything a bit more stable at speed and in wind. A more even turn into corners compared to the PR3s which seemed to be more eager (although that could be down to whatever I had packed on the bike that day!)  Distance may be the same, but hard to say as this set of tyres has done mainly long distance riding with relatively few corners.

Thanks mate, I knew you had used the Angels before, I spoke to the Pirelli rep Phillip Island earlier this year about them
But changed my mind when Pr4 came out. Did you go with the A spec like Saaz
I will have to check out the tyre places in Slacks Ck :thumb

saaz
The A spec rear comes in a 180/55/17 the OEM tyre is 170/60/17
I don't see a problem though  :thumb
I will have to ring around to see what is available

I didn't check whether the A spec was available for the ST1300, just assumed it would. Normal GT should be ok though, as that is what TJ must be using.

ST1300
170/60 ZR 17 M/C (72W) TL  rear
120/70 ZR 18 M/C (59W) TL  front

The A spec tyre is not the normal size for the ST1300, and is not available.  I don't use non standard sizes except in an emergency.

So, using the  non spec A tyres appears pretty good to me, they are still the same set of tyres I had on for the run around Oz towards the end of last year (so that run, a run up to Barkley Homestead and back, plus all my running around back home, would have been over 20 thousand k so far) and I think there is still a good amount of tread on them, so much so i will be using them on a couple of runs that I have coming up shortly.

I will still go for the PR4 for my next set, if I can get them, if not then back to the Angel GT

Thanks for your reply, I was at work today so could not ring around, I have a later start tomorrow
So hopefully can find something to replace my original Bridgestone's, I thought they would survive the Kyogle RTE and Inverell
But after returning from Kyogle they didn't look so good, so I have decided to replace them
So hopefully I trip next week to Brisbane to get new ones  :thumb

Well I changed my mind again, I have decided I really want to try the Michelin PR4  :grin
They say we won't see any in Australia for a few months as they are on back order
So I have ordered them through Jake Wilson in USA.
So I will still do Inverell on the original Bridgestone's then replace them after that  :thumbsup

Thanks for all the reply's  :hatwave

Compared to our prices it's like getting a two for one deal. Price for a set (inc postage) in the US is close to buying just the rear over here but then you also need to have it fitted. Our car tyre dealer does it for $15 a wheel probably cause we live here.

They cost me $311 +$75 postage, I think you  could save more if you buy 2 sets
You would Pay over$500 here to get them
But the main reason I got them from USA was because I could not get the Michelin PR4 here for now
Now just waiting to get them and try them out   :grin

Might be over $500 in Toowoomba.  $460 fitted and balanced, including wheels off and on and moly lube here in Brissie.
Your $386 will need a bit added for fitting.  Our dollar is sliding against the US$ which won't help in coming days.

I had all intention of riding to Brisbane to get them but no one could supply any, so I looked at other options
Get another Brand Pirelli Angel's) or go get some PR4's from the USA, probably next week a container full will turn up

Yes, but that will also mean price rises for imported products (like tyres etc) in the shops over here as well.

I am just about due to change the tyres on my ST1300, Previously PR2s, Then Metzlers Roadtech Z8 which I have had a very good run with, very good grip wet and dry.14000 k on NZ roads , 4000 at all up weight. I was considering Angel GTs but had some negative feedback, so , Another set of Metzlers

Angel gts are as good as the pr2s and 3s in all respects, just be sure to get the A spec versions for the st1300 to handle the weight. I am trying the pr4s next set

Interesting that you have heard negative comments about the Angel GT  -  as I said above "I am still running a set of Angel GT on mine. They have been a good set of tyres as were the the PR3.  I will be looking for the PR4 as well when it is time to re shod the bike."

These have been around Oz and then some, still have a bit of tread on them

What were the negative comments that you heard and were they from riders that had used them on their bike and was it an ST1300?

I had asked a friend of mine who owns a number of bikes, and is an experienced rider, when I mentioned possibly fitting GTs he said a mates Z14 had them on and didnt get a very good performancefrom them. Dont ask how he handled his tyres, I dont know. I think this round I will stick with the Metzlers Z8s

After a bit more research on GTs, Pirelli have flattened the profile a little more over the STs,which requires a fraction more turn in effort, definatly not a Z14 tyre,as it is more touring orintated which may explain the negative feedback

The profile on the GTs is rather flat, so very consistent turn in, which helps on a heavier bike (more like some Dunlops I have used in the past). The PR3s are definitely more willing to go into corners.  I have no real preference for either based on those characters alone. And the character will vary depending on the tyre size you use - I am basing this comparison on 170/60-17 front and 190/55-17 rears. The change in profile on the rear from 55 to 50 can change things a lot. And comparing to ST sizes is different again, as 120/70-18 front and 170/60-17 rear are totally different, so may feel very different to any other bike.

Yep, that makes sense. Some tyres are good on a specific bike and not others.  I would still be comfortable with the Angel GT on a Honda ST1300 and recommend them to others riding the same bike as I would be with the PR3 and hopefully the PR4 when I get them on my bike.
