Apart from regular maintenance (oil, filter, valve checks and adjust) at 180,000kms the engine is unopened and original clutch (ST11 1996).  ST13 should be better as no timing belt change at 150,000kms.  I do oil and filter changes like Brock says, at around the Honda interval or earlier/later depending on trips.  I haven't really heard of anyone doing engine work on an ST13 (some water pumps and thermostats aside, but you get that with cars as well)

I use a Repco oil filter, no point in spending 30-40$$ for a $7.00 item. it takes an hour to do if you take it easy.

Same as saaz except that mine had it's first valve check at 120,000kms ( still within spec) and carb balance at the same time. Also air cleaner and plugs done for the first time as well..........

Now at 150,000kms waiting for cooling system parts to arrive so they can be done when belt is done. I think 14 years is long enough for hoses to last though they don't appear to be that bad. And this'll be the first coolant change as well..........slack, I know.

My 1100 did a water pump at about 40000kms. I think was because it had been sitting basically unused for prolonged periods and the seal perished a bit and started to weep. I've done the usual oil changes, brake pad change, carb balances etc. but this to me constitutes normal maintenance, not engine work.

When I bought it the bike was nearly 12 years old with 37000kms on the clock.

My bike has 108k, got it at 104k.

I just did a oil & filter change on my ST1300, my qride instructor said to REALLY look after your bike to do them every 3k, but the bike shops say every 6k. Got the oil and filter from a bike shop at Coomera (Shark Leathers). Filter was $14, Oil was $70 10W-40 Synthetic 4L.

I will be hunting for a new radiator as the current one has about 50-80% bend blades and indents from rocks and I've tried straightening them but it's extremely time consuming and can't get it anywhere close to looking 1/2 descent for air flow. The coolant looks in pretty good condition.
The winshield I'll be pulling the front end apart to have a look to why the motor's are not in sync, so it goes up and down crooked (got it like this).

Will be going to Team Moto Honda tomorrow to see if I can get some plastic fasteners for the tuppaware as some are missing and I may of used the wrong ones when putting it all back together last night in some of the places.
For the bolts I've been recommended Qld Engineering at Browns Plains, "they have everything in normal and chrome".

I'll be learning to tinker on my bike and gather the tools required as $500 & $800 for just servicing at Honda seems a little "Crazy" and additional costs if anything outside the service is required.

Hi Rob, How many fasteners do you need? I have some universal ones that I use, they are all one size and I just enlarge the hole to make them fir. Also Team Moto charge like a wounded Bull for these around $12.00 for a pack of ten. If you would like some of mine I can meet you @ Team Moto in the morning.
In regard to Servicing your St I have found Capalaba Motorcycles on 32455456. I had them do a oil and filter change before going to Tasmania and they only charged $87.50 and did it while I waited. Much better than getting oil all over the floor of your garage and/or centre stand etc.

Strewth!  You can't do it yourself for that money!!  Did they use ex-fish shop oil?

Definitely dont kneed to change the oil and filters at 3000, or 6000Ks. 10 to 12000 is fine

As long as it doesmt have friction modifiers, ie teflon or the like.


Personally, I dont see the need for the expense of fully synthetic. All you need is an oil that meets(many exceed) the honda specs

I use Castrol 4T from Repco (4lt $33.00) and Repco ROF 135 filter (20% off today). Have noticed that the oil is coming out a lot cleaner now that I have a few changes done, so it must have a fair amount of detergent in it and the sight window is clearer too. As Brock said, any oil that meets or exceeds the Honda specs without friction modifiers in it is ok.
