FarRide East #24 - Bargara Qld
« on: June 03, 2013, 04:03:19 PM »
A bit late, but who is going?  I am setting off on Friday to do a 1200, and at the moment plan to leave after lunch to head south somewhere.  May go via the coast, may go inland. Depends on whether I feel like getting back Sunday night, as I do have the Metung RTE on the next weekend.

Basic plan is a start docket in Parkes, stay in Dalby then complete the ride Saturday morning.  Pretty simple really.  The NSW/ACT flag should go back with Biggles to make its way to Ebor for the July get together. Otherwise I will just have to go back that way.

The normal email from Clint just came in, so game on!   :wht11 (for those who have not done FarRides, the email confirms details and registration, and gives contact details if anything happens and you can turn up)

I now have to wait another day before leaving, so may as well get organised.  Oh and wash the bike, as I normally do  >:()

I have just reassembled Ruby after installing grip warmers because Bathurst cured me of cold hands forever.  I'll be riding early morning inland for Bargara, so it will be cold.  Will be a good tryout of the grips for Ebor.  As with any of these installations when I do them, I test everything before panelling up.  The tank cover takes a bit of fitting, and the seat can be a challenge with an Airhawk and sheepie complicating fitting.
Got it all together and went for a short ride.  Realised I hadn't checked the driving lights...
Not a lumen to be seen   :||||

At least I only had to take the seat and side panels off.  Somewhere along the process I'd shorted the hot supply to my socket that also feeds the driving light relay.  It would have been nice if it just fused but something made the whole fuse holder melt, so then it was into the shed digging through the treasures for a replacement fuse holder since the shops were long-closed.  Good thing I don't throw anything away!   :wink1

Believe it or not, that's the condensed version of this afternoon's fun.  I'll spare you more details.
Another shake-down run in the morning and she'll be ready to roll.

This is a resurrected thread.  My date-line here is:

However, I did just complete the installation of the latest version of Hot Grips (last year's quit) and two Cree LED European pattern 50mm 3000 lumens each lights.  On the forks, as per your post (without needing to move either the reflectors or the lights).

 :grin

With all the auxiliary fuses, relays, Starcom and alarm it's getting crowded under the seat.  Maybe one day I'll "do-a-Diesel" and rewire Ruby.

:fp That will teach me for not reading the date of posts.

Hopefully the new heated grips will last a bit longer :thumb and if you get a chance could you please post a pic of the new lights?

I don't know why the previous ones quit.
Immediately after I installed a lithium battery they just stopped working.  I went back to the supplier and they sold me a replacement controller for $10.  That didn't work either.  I didn't bother with it any more, but with the next winter approaching fast I figured I'd better get new ones.  Still the same price at $119, but new technology- the controller is integrated in the handlebar selector which saves some space under the seat and simplifies wiring.  It also claims to intelligently monitor the voltage and shut down if everything goes quiet, such as when you stop the engine but have the ignition left on.  In fact they're so confident they recommend you power it directly off the battery, and even if you forget to turn them off, they will shut down when there have been few voltage fluctuations or no later than when the battery drops to 11.4 volts.  That sounds a bit low for my liking, so I've run them off a relay from the ignition.

A couple of pix.  Not the sharpest, I'm afraid.  My good camera is in Honk Kong under repair.  Clear enough to show the bike needs a wash.    :'(

A daylight shot of the lights not looking directly into them.  Saves the shot being just a blur of white.

Now we've done the Bargara FR to death....     :fp

The grips you now have sound like the ones I have, they do work well (the automatic shutdown also works a treat ;-*) and the new lights look great :thumbsup
