Shim servicing required

(1/3) > >>

Robert Knight:
Hi all,I am in Ballarat and have a 1990 St1100 with apparently 62000kms on the clock,I have a problem with quite a loud tapping noise coming from the left bank upper cylinders,I suspect the shims need resizing,I have just done 1500kms of touring hoping the noise was maybe lack of use but alas its still there, not when cold but soon after it starts so shims I think, can anyone on here recommend a service mechanic in Victoria that has worked on St 1100's enough to be trusted to do a good job of mine, should I buy my own shim kit or do good mechanics have their own and you just pay for the ones they use tia.

David Hayes, below links, has looked after my ST1300 and VT250.  When in the UK, he worked on ST1300s for the Police, not sure if he as ST1100 experience though, but a call or message may be all that's needed.  You can tell him Michael referred you.  When he's not busy he likes a chat, so make sure you have time on your side.

Jdbiker:
Hi Robert, might be a good idea to remove rocker covers and check the valve clearances first. In engine’s with bucket and shim type adjustment, the clearances tend to get tighter with wear rather than the other way around. Your ST1100 although high in years has relatively low mileage .

Brock:
Its extremely rare for the 1300 and 1100 to need re shimming.

Robert Knight:
I need the problem to be assessed by someone who knows these bikes, could be exhaust leak but I cant tell.
