Post by: Trevsta83 on March 26, 2016, 04:14:45 PM
Hey guys,

Servicing my 1300 and noticed a knocking noise in the rear casing when in gear and allowed to spin on the center stand.

Bike is a 2006 with 114000km

Appreciate an ideas as to what I need to do

Is it only when it's in gear?  If it's the same in neutral that isolates it to the rear drive, unless the gearbox load is necessary to make the noise.
Yours is the first I can recall with that symptom, but you might like to search this site and http://www.st-owners.com/ (http://www.st-owners.com/) with the words "rear drive" and any others you think might fit the description.

Hi Biggles,

Yes it is only when in drive. Would a worn / damaged bearing be possible?

I'm far from expert in that area, but logically it points to the bearing at the back of the gearbox.
Why that would wear out is anybody's guess.

Ultimately, the drive is going to have to be opened by someone with the appropriate skills and tools.
Fortunately, it's not as many manhours as accessing bits further forward (like the clutch   :'( )
(Unless the fault is in the gearbox itself and the noise is transferring).

I can only suggest, to try to locate the nose a little better.
Put the bike on the center stand. Remove the panniers.
make sure the rear wheel is clear of the ground.
Select first gear with the motor off.
Rock the rear wheel  quickly rotational forwards and backwards. To see if you can hear any clunk
Keep one hand on the drive shaft cover. In order to feel for any vibrations etc.
Get a long screwdriver or a short piece of garden hose ,about a foot long and  use that as a sort of stethoscope to hear if you can locate the proximity of the clunk noise whilst vigiouresly rocking the wheel back and forward.
You will probably do better if you have someone to help you.
You might be able to do the same listening test with the motor going and driving the rear wheel.
Let us know how you go.
If you can feel a lot of play or slack  and you can hear a noise in the  hub of the rear wheel when the motor is off and in gear. my first suspect would be something worn in the drive shaft or the  drive splines in the rear wheel assembly have started to wear and are starting to chop out.
Hope this helps.

See if there is any lateral play (sideways). {Bearings}

Thanks guys,

Took the wheel off. 1 bearing looks a little worn.

Ran the gears without the wheel fitted and it still makes the noise, although it is not as noticeable.

Will attempt to pull out the shaft tomorrow. I'm guessing there is a bearing on that too?

When you do so, please take a few photos and notes to share with those of us that have no idea how to do it :thumb

I'd be having a close look at the universal joint in the shaft.    Have a read of my post about my blown UV joint.  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=10046.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=10046.0)    Idling in gear on the centrestand it showed as a repetitive clunk, while at highway speeds I felt it as a buzz through the footgegs which was worse when going over undulations as the joint flexed.

Definitely a likely possibility. Thanks. Will take a look in the coming days. It is an ex police bike and has done a lot of hard work. Clunks when rocking the wheel. Will let you know what I find. Probably have to order parts ex Japan I'm guessing as it seems not too many people have the problem.

I have an ST1300 2008 with 294,000 klms which recently developed a clunk following gear changes when I applied power.  Took it to the Honda shop and after a week waiting until they sourced a specialist tool to get into the final drive, they sent me these photos of the UV joint.  Two weeks to wait for the replacement from Japan and I should be back on the road.
