NORTH WEST - Stanley

Stay in the caravan park and binge on lobster in the seafood restaurant opposite.

Your budget maybe!!  When we were there last October a whole Lobby was $200, and a half was $120.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Wow!  That's one I haven't done, so it should go on The List.  Is it a practical day out from Port Sorel or would it need an overnight?

Google Maps suggests 4:33, I reckon with some spirited riding it would be easily under 4:00 even with a stop, but then you might miss some sights.  But allow another 1:00 for sight seeing and a rest at Strathgorden, and then at least another 1:00 or 1:30 (depend where you next night is), 'cause there's not many options west of Westerway.

Four and half hours one way accoding to google maps.  I think I shall be doing when I stay in Hobart (two and a half hours).

I find Google Map times very pessimistic, eg. Maydena to Gordon Dam = 1:00; my time = 0:45, but making Hobart a base is more sensible (IMHO).

I do a lot of stopping and taking photos if I see things of interest so often take longer than google maps suggest, but I've got four nights in Hobart so I shall be doing when I am there.

HOBART ACCOMMODATION

We have stayed at Edinburgh Gallery a few times.  Only rated 3.5 stars, but it has the basics, clean sheets, plenty of hot water, a cooked breakfast, off-street parking (if you're quick).   And walking distance to Salamanca Place bars and restaurants, and the Market if you there on a Saturday.

A little (perhaps a lot) quirky, earned the nickname Fawlty Towers.  Good value for two or more, especially if there is room or bed sharing, not value for the solo stayer.

https://www.thebookingbutton.com.au/properties/edinburghgdirect?check_in_date=24-02-2019&check_out_date=25-02-2019&number_adults=2

As BG has identified, Hobart is a good base for many a day ride.

When are you in Hobart Bodo , we might be able to catch up
November 5th to 9th staying in Glenorchy.  Haven't locked in any plans as yet, but sketchy plans are

5th Ride from Devonport to Glenorchy

6th Check out Bruny Island

7th Ride to as far south as possible.  I know the concrete runs out half way to Southport so will see how far on the dirt I can take the kwaka when I see it.

8th Do the dam run as mentioned above.

These are just rough plans.  Those days are interchangeable.

Check out on the 9th and then make my way to Swansea.

6th Check out Bruny Island

Only toured from the ferry to the south island.  Get some pics of the north island if you ride around there.  Take your lunch and refreshments with you, otherwise take out a loan if you buy from the Adventure Bay store, although they are not as expensive the Coles Bay store (last stop before Wine Glass Bay).

7th Ride to as far south as possible.  I know the concrete runs out half way to Southport so will how far on the dirt I can take the kwaka when I see it.

The seal (well last month) ends at 344 Lune River Road.  Then approx. 19km of gravel.  We missed out out the ride to Cockle Creek, it was late in the afternoon, we were pretty tired so turned around, just as well as we were setting-up camp on Bruny in the dark.  https://goo.gl/maps/QAUHz1txuwr

This November my plan is to get to the end of the seal by around 9:00am, and leave plenty of time to get to southern most road.

I also add Geeveston to the map, a stop here is worth considering - if you want some information on the timber industry, and if you like a nice pie and / or a vanilla slice.

This alternative to the Huon Highway - https://goo.gl/maps/hygG4dhjM9K2 - is a little detour I'm planning for in November.

Take a look at the options here:-

https://www.wcwr.com.au/tours

The options have changed since I was there but the ride from Queenstown to Strahan is amazing.
When I did it, it was train one way and bus return.

Great hospitality ....

Yes, I have met the manager and her husband.  They use to manage a couple of other B&B places in Maydena, one of which was a house opposite (which was owned by a mate of mine, sadly he has since sold it), so I will need to look at other options, thanks for the link.

Definitely not doable in a day from Port Sorell. Stay at Tarraleah, Derwent Bridge or Mt Field National Park and do it either morning or afternoon when the lighting is 'special'

7th Ride to as far south as possible.  I know the concrete runs out half way to Southport so will see how far on the dirt I can take the kwaka when I see it.

The dirt is usually pretty chopped up, well, it has been the couple of times I've gone there although in saying that my partner & myself had no trouble driving in in a little Suzuki Alto...  :thumbsup

This awaits you: Cockle Creek

Cockle Creek is on my goal list for later this year.  It was a lack of time, rather than roads condition that caused us to miss it in 2014.

At the other end of the island, there's nice C roads and views to catch, if you get the time - looking out over Gunns Plains.

...... but I do need to start planning some day trips.

Our trip planning consists of:

Week 1
  • Check weather forecast (on the Monday morning before the NatRally) for the next few days.
  • If it's raining on the west coast, head east.
  • If it's raining on the east coast, head west.
  • If it's raining both coasts, head south.
  • Before heading off, check booking.com for accomodation options that night.
  • Repeat point 5.
  • Repeat point 5.

Week 2
  • Repeat Week 1

It's worked on previous Tassie Tours.
