When I finish it, I will post the drawings and the parts list to make things a bit easier for some one else to replicate.

The design is loosely based on a Bandicoot trailer.

I will also post some fabrication tips, like cutting long straight lines into the side of RHS

Jigged up for truing up hinge standoff (Gotta make sure the hinge is square)

used the straight edge to get squared up surfaces.

The finished job.

Couch,
That is the trailing arm for the wheel/suspension. The trailer was just clamped together before just to see how it looked. The last pic is the trailing arm with the hinge sleeves on, I dont like the way it turned out, as the support doesnt look strong enough so I will cut them off and re do them. I have thought of a better way to attach them and it will look better too.

As with all projects, as you go on you can see a better way to do it, so you go back three steps and do it all again.

I have no doubt whatsoever that you know what you're doing mate.................it's me that doesn't!!

I'm sure when it's finished it's going to be exactly as you'd hoped it would be!!

I built a trailer many years ago for an off the beach catamaran that I brought new. I had never even held welding equipment prior to beginning. I designed it myself, cut & welded it, then painted it with Galvit, and it served me many years until I upgraded to a larger Cat, which fortunately came with a ready made trailer.

I look forward to seeing the finished pics Brock!

Great work Brock, I'm VERY interested in this project, its exactly what I want to do. I will be relying on you to do the development and documentation so I won't have to re-invent the wheel (pun intended).

Above your avatar is "Tardis Tech", is that for the WA Police data system or "Dr Who"?

Cheers

Dr Who. I have nothing to do with the Police, apart from a daughter who wants to join, her boyfriend who is a copper (and some of daughters friends) and a few coppers that I know.

I have met a few on the side of the road occasionaly as well, tho not really a social environment.. :rofl :rofl

Oh no, I'm not making one for any one else. To register a self made trailer, I have to take engineering responsibility of the thing for the life of the trailer no matter who owns it.

However, I'm quite happy to help you build one, you just have to do the paper work for the VIN and the rego and take the engineering responsibility..

Brock I am sure you have thought about it, but just in case have you calculated your weight distribution so your swing arm location isn't too far forward or reverse of centre of mass to ensure the ball weight isn't too heavy or light?  Better to be slightly heavy in my opinion.

When you go to registrar a trailer here in Qld also they don't want the rear overhang anymore than 60% of the measurement between the ball coupling, and the centre line of axle group.  I presume this is similar over there mate, if you aren't aware.

Looking good so far and I hope you are happy with the outcome.  Keeping burning metal bloke.

Thanks Tack, yes I did think about it, I have the Standard for trailers downloaded.

The C of G at the moment is just where the forward taper starts so with my design, the axle pivot point is to the rear by about 200mm giving about a 3kilo load on the tow point. Dimensions are similar to a Bandicoot trailer.

Today just located bike springs/shocks to the size I wanted. Off a Kwaka Z250 or similar. Not to strong, and not to weak. Now to design and build the mount points. As with everything on the trailer, its over engineered. The mounts on the Z250 look positivelyweak compared to mine.

The pivot point and bushes for the trailing arm are 4 tonne bushes, mounted into heavy spring hangers. I dont think any thing is going to break in a hurry.

It will be a high speed white, (may be with blue checker stripe   :grin ) to match the bike.

( Maybe with flashing red n blue clearance lighting. It would look cool, No???)

I like watching the pictures of this project.
As you look at it questions arise and you ask why didn't he do..........?
Then the next image - it's been done.
Thanks Brock good entertainment.

Yeah, I do that why didnt I do it that way as well. So I cut that bit off and remake it. I use a lot more material and welding wire that way. :crackup

Wait til you see the suspension hinges, talk about over engineer!!!! Its will be done the way it is cos thats the bits I could find.  I dont have a full metal workshop in the back yard so have to make do.

If I win lotto, I will buy a workshop and fit it out with lathes milling machines, tube benders, sheet metal benders and other powerful stuff.

Then me mates can come and use it for their projects. :runyay :runyay :runyay :runyay :runyay

Bit of an update, got the suspension loosely mounted. But dont like it will have to do some changes.

Note, at this point its upside down (Otherwise the box would be realy hard to fit.)

The trailing arm

from the rear

right way up

After load testing, I found one of the shocks is soft so they will have to be replaced. Also I will need to fit over travel stops, so the suspension will return tp the normal place.
