Good news! The new valve cover gaskets have arrived and are now fitted, and they are no longer leaking.
Bad news! Now that I've eliminated that leak, I have now found the next leak to fix.
Good news! It looks like that is now the only leak left to fix.
Bad news! It looks like a pain to get to.
It's low down on the left-rear of the engine, but I'm not sure what this part is (I'm assuming it's the alternator?).
From what I can tell the top of it is perfectly dry, so the leak is at the lower part of it's seal. Any wiser heads able to tell me what this component is, and if it's a pain to sort out, as I suspect it might be?

Yep, I've been doing some further research, and I've taken the fuel tank out for a better view.
It turns out the previous owner told me a porky and the alternator has not been upgraded, so I'm trying to decide if I fix the seal to get back on the road or keep the bike off the road longer and attempt the upgrade. Leaning towards the latter at this stage.

Everything I've found so far says the 40 amp was introduced on the 1996 models. Mine's definitely the 28 amp version though.

The 28A were oil cooled, and prone to leaking. There is a special tool that can be made, to help fit the 40A , info available on the net but I forget where..

Thanks guys. From what I can tell so far from all the forums and videos I've seen is that the tricky part is using a special pin/tool to lock the front gears in place during the install, but is it possible to fit the new alternator without removing the front gear setup in the first place?
Or are there modifications that need to be made that requires it all to be removed?

Well Sir, there's your problem.....
I have managed to open up the alternator, and the o-ring was tucked up inside the back section. Removed it and found it is nicely flattened and quite hardened (with the exception of a 2-3 cm section that was very stretchy).
I'm going to leave the upgrade option for another time, so will replace the o-ring and get the bike back on the road for now.
Although that in itself is proving an interesting task as there are no Honda/Hitachi 95.5 x 2.4 o-rings in the country! There's a bearing place near me that says they have a 90 x 2.5, so I'll see if that works.

I've grabbed the one from the bearing place near me and have put it in place, and it seems to be a great fit. Now slowly doing up the bolts to make sure it doesn't pinch.
After that install the fuel tank and exhaust, run the engine and make sure all leaks are gone.

I spoke too soon. This bike does not want to get back on the road!
I was tightening the last bolt, and it was no-where near as tight as the others but the alternator casing ended up cracking. Lots of swearing resulted! :cuss :||||
Guess I'll be taking the swingarm out and doing the upgrade after all.

I'm thinking super glue and gaffa tape aint gonna fix that..
There may ba an aluminium welder around near you that could repair that.. (Depending on the quality of the alloy)
