Title: Travelling to Cairns - any ideas? (Diesel is going Troppo!!!!)
Post by: Diesel on June 03, 2012, 02:07:01 PM
I am lucky enough to have a weekend to spend in Cairns and was wondering if you well travelled Ladies and Gents have anything for me for the 'Must Do' list.

So far there is the Kuranda Scenic Railway and a trip out to Arlington Reef in the glass-bottomed boat.

A trip up to the lookout perhaps in a hired moke?

And finally (Advice sought)... was hoping to take a drive out to the Atherton Tablelands (130km) and over/around the Gillies Ranges. Is this possible?

Also - any good restaurants (seafood) to try - I always like to eat at recommended places as that's a better rap than the brochure.

Thanks in advance. Diesel

The Gillies and Kuranda roads are bike roads, not Moke roads!
But don't miss a run through the tablelands anyway.  Call at the two volcanic lakes, both beautiful.
Cairns itself doesn't offer much.  A walk along the refurbed esplanade at night is nice.

By the way when are you going?  I'm travelling up on Sunday, although by cage, and staying the week for a course.

Awesome thanks Tack - thanks for the extra kg I'm now putting on too!!           :crackup

I'm flying in at sparrow's Saturday and home Mon arvo/eve.

Sunday I hope to spend seeing the Ath Tablelands - might be time for a quick brew with you and Bikebear if things work out.

Is Boxhead with you?

Cheers, Diesel

The gillies is a must.

Kuranda either sky or rail.  I probably prefer the rail- just spectacular, either way it's brilliant.  Make the time to spend in kuranda- look for the downed plane.......

My must do- Trinity beach- the area is a bit of a dive nowadays.  But if you're there the main road to the beach- soon as you hit the esplanade there's a restaurant to your right.  Brilliant food.  I'll try to dig up the name of the place.  The bloke is a mad keen soccer fan.  Tell him you like the wrong team and you're likely to end up in a little light conversation.

Stay away from water.  There's crocks.  Big ones.  I'm not joking.

Sorry Diesel I just checked in again after getting back on Friday night.  I was up there solo bloke doing a coaching course with Qld Cricket.  Didn't have much of a chance for any sight seeing at all - didn't even take the cameras out of the case during the week.
