Rider to pillion communication.

During our recent border ride I lost my BT unit and decided to replace with two new devices which we can hear easily at legal speed limits.

While looking for the GPS I noticed they had some Sena gear. http://www.motogps.com.au/sena-20s-dual-kit-bluetooth-communication-system/

I know some of you use SENA but to me they seem a bit pricey but they also have a lot more functions that might make this one more useful.

Having had Starcomm stuff and then Goldwing stuff, I highly recommend the Sena 20s gear.

The Sena units are very reliable.

I was using a Sena10S to communicate with Wombat on a bike Marshalling event. The bikes were about a K apart in bush and we were still able to talk, all at 100Ks. In fact is was better comms than the UHF.

I have a Sena 20S pair.  Much better than the Interphone BT (currently with STroppy) set-up I used previously, but at 4 x times the price, I'm not sure if they are 4 x times better.

Mrs W and I use them for pillion to rider communications, under these circumstances they are excellent.

Only used them rider to rider on a couple of occasions.  This was with Phil (the mate accompanying me to Wooli) on a ride to Talbotville (Google it).  Phil bought his 20S so as he communicate with me and some of his other mates as the 20S will pair with non-Sena units (this why STroppy is using my old Interphone BT units).  Anyway, communications to and from Talbotville were very good when there was line-of-sight between us and probably up to a km or so.  Not so good in hilly, twisty terrain in the VIC high country - NO see, NO talk.

My mobile phone is provided by work.  As they paid for it and pay the bills, I'm expected to be available 24/7.  In 17 years in my current job, I've only been contacted after hours three times.  Each time it was a report of a traffic signal fault, and whilst there is a pretty clear procedure for contacting our traffic signal contractor for these events, some people at our call centre get confused and call me instead.  Small penalty, when it could reduce the risk a serious crash.

Mmmm........I might talk to the boss about him paying for the Sena.

The 20S and 10S would be a cheaper option. Both are excellent, the longer range of the 30S wouldnt be needed to talk to a pillion.

Part of the logic of my post is the issue of parts for superseded models.  Fr'instance I need a new headset for my new fixed face helmet but the Australian supplier no longer offers a set with a fixed mic, only a boom mic at 50% dearer.  Obviously this is a perennial problem with all technology.  But what one hopes for is as the new technology becomes more widely adopted, prices will go down.  This doesn't appear to have happened with the "10" series.

The base plate for the SMH 10 fits the 10S, (and vice versa) between the two series, there will be a setup for you. There are so many of them out there, I think they will be around for a long time.

I have the SMH5FM, i believe its ONE of the cheapest at around $200
For years i struggled with cheap modified Bluetooth headsets and fitting them into my helmets, all just so i could hear the GPS telling me directions.
The Sena is 1000% better in EVERY way


Seamless connection to Phone and Bluetooth.
Super long lasting battery, (and i can charge it while its in use if needed)
Crystal clear communication.
Able to link up with 4 other riders if need be ( I dont as im mostly on my own)
FM radio, not that i like to listen to the radio when im riding, but its there if i ever want.       
And once its set in the helmet i can forget about it as the module just unclips for super easy charging (Can leave it on and charge it if i want too)
And i can call customers easily when i pull over and cant find their address.

All round i love it, wish i had done it sooner.

I'm not to fussed about the FM as the range is rather poor compared to AM plus my phone doubles as an mp3 player should I want to listen to music.

With the old unit I had I could get phone calls but could never work out hang up or how to make them.

The car's GPS could connect to the phone for traffic updates (never used) but not to a bike intercom so having voice instructions in the helmet would be something new.

Now with RadioApp or ABC Listen App I can get better coverage than FM and no static like AM using mobile data.
The only downside is when it starts to break up, it quickly disappears.

A tip for the Sena units.

Turn off Vox Mic and side tone, a little wind noise willopen the mic and give a wind noise right into the ears..
Boost Mic volume and transmit power.

I have been told by the Sena Rep/Importer that the aerial is in the LONGEST speaker wire and for best performance, instead of running the wire around the back of the helmet, to run it straight up and over (under the lining of course) and that will increase reception as well as range.

Vertically polarised radio signals don't have the same range as horizontally polarised radio signals.

The ground edge of the vertical signal 'drags' and eventually falls over.

That's why most TV antennas are horizontally polarised.
