I/we will be coming in from the O'Connell Road so could meet up near the Sofala Road at 10am. Probably have to fill up in Bathurst to give more options of which way to go. What are the Cudegong/Glen Alice Roads like?
Hi John, It's been a while since I've been on that road (in my Landcruiser), but looking on Google Maps, from the Glen Davis turnoff on the Castlereagh HWay, it's 84km to Rylstone, with 23km of dirt. I'm not sure where it turns to dirt, but it used to be fairly gravelly. If we're in Bathurst at 10 to eat at Rylstone at 11, we'd have to leave Bathurst by about 8:00, as it's about a 3 hr ride via Glen Alice. The more direct route on the Peel Rd is a bit over an hour - no
that I've seen, but there's always a first time! It's a good road to Ilford, but from the Castlereagh HWay to Rylstone, it's a bit bumpy with a few spots where you need to take care. It's a bit like that any way into Rylstone though, but no problems.
If you were heading back to Canberra that night, the most direct route would be back through Portland and Diamond Swamp Rd to Oberon. Diamond Swamp Rd may have a bit of dirt as well.
Another place that I haven't managed to get to since they did some art work there is Portland. Apparently, the town had some artists come in and paint a whole heap of buildings vacant walls with heritage advertising signs; you know the Kinkara Tea sign, etc etc. That might be a nice diversion back (also for any Sydney members), and you could alway head back via O'Connel or the Hampton Rd, on the River Lett side of Lithgow.
As I'm only 45mins away from Bathurst, I can meet you there anytime, and depending on which way you want to go, either side of the O'Connel Rd. Let me know which way you'd like to go and we'll go from there. That goes for anyone else coming from the south and west of Rylstone.
