Problems with Metzeler tyres on ST1300

Just a warning about Metzeler tyres.

I have always run Metzeler Tyres from the old fishbone pattern to Z4s - Z6s and Z8s have now come on the scene.  Having done 140000 klms on my ST1100 and now 150000 klms on my ST 1300, usuall getting up to 9000 klms per set I have purchased over 30 sets of them...The last set they could not supply Z8s so they supplied a Z6 for the front and a Z8 for the rear saying that they would be compatible.

I instantly had a vibration through the bike just like a tight spot in a chain gives.  Tyres back 0ff and re-balance, no gain, wheels off and new wheel bearings, no gain,  still there.  Tried contacting Metzeler but they just would not reply.  After 1000 klms, (and heaps of mechanical cost) threw the tyres away, that was $500 down the drain and purchased a different brand, about the same price, the vibration gone and I have done 12000 klms and still have tread.

Will not be going back to Metzeler.

well I hate to admit it because they are made by the same company now, pirelli angels, they are great in the wet and dry, suit the bike and me fantastic, looks like I might get 13-14000 klms, better that the old 9000 klms with metzelers.

I've been very happy with my Michelin PR3s.  I've put 10800 on them, and they're still looking "fresh".  The last pair I had (PR2/PR3) did 19500). I note on the walls that they're made in Spain.  I wonder if the batch of Metzellers you bought were from a different factory.  It's increasingly a global village, with manufacturers outsourcing to very unlikely places.  The Metzellers I've run over the years have returned around 12500 kays.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott
