I have just brought a st1100 the starter motor turns but engine wont turn over have replaced the starter motor with no success. Any ideas before i pull the motor out to replace the starter clutch. have tried turning the back wheel in reverse to free up the starter clutch with no success have also tried to push start it with no luck.

does the engine turn over when you try to push start. or does it stop real quick.

I havent heard of an actual seized engine before..

the engine turns over but the motor is not turning over. When the bike is in 5th gear and press the starter with clutch in and if you let it go slowly the back wheel turns while cranking but the engine is still not turning over. Any ideas team would help.

If you can make the back wheel turn with the starter motor cranking, the engine is turning over.. (not sure how the engine continues to crank in gear but-- that shouldnt happen). If the bike continues to roll forward in gear when push starting , then the engine is turning over.

I think you need some one who lives close to you to help to determine what is going on. Its hard to remote diagnose from Perth.

Yes true but i have had a look at the camshafts and they are not turning. The starter motor is turning the flywheel and not engaging the motor. When we tried to push start it it would nt start all all.

If the cam shafts arent turning, the timing belt will probably be broken, this could mean a trashed engine, as the valves will contact the pistons.

I think you will need to take the front off the engine to check. There is a workshop manual available in the 1100 section.

I have never heard of the starter clutch before, and have never heard of a problem with one before..

I am not sure what you mean by this, what motor are you talking about, if not the engine??

This shouldn't happen, as there are micro switches to prevent cranking when in gear with the clutch out. If the back wheel is turning, the engine is turning and driving the gearbox..

Seems like you may have a seized engine as Brock said, most likely caused by broken timing belt. Remove spark plugs, put bike in 2nd gear and turn wheel, if engine turns over then all good, could be a starter issue, if no turn, then you probably have a seized engine which isn’t worth fixing depending on the damage. You will have to pull off the timing cover to check for broken belt. Good luck.

Bent valve stems are a common result of broken timing belt, but if there’s no damage to engine just replace belt . These engines are more or less bulletproof 👍

hey team took the heads off and found all the exhaust valves were bent. No damage to the inlet valves. Just ordered the new valves so hopefully on the road soon. The only thing is chasing head gaskets are idea where i could get some?

Thanks for your help team
