Top Box Key vanished...HELP!!
« on: March 24, 2013, 05:02:11 PM »
Gentlemen,
Whilst out doing the Black Dog Ride this morning I managed to loose the key to my 2004 version Top Box (along with some other keys that I should be able to replace without too much bother). The box was open so I can get to the contents, but I can't lock it and I don't have a spare key anywhere. Can anyone help me with smart ideas about how to get a replacement key and/or who to talk to to manage this feat? I will have to remove the box until I can replace the key for obvious reasons, so I'd much appreciate any help anyone can give with this. :eek :eek
Cheers,
Paul

Whizz, your top box should have a number/letter or combo of both somewhere on the latch (may be a coded ID to supplier).  If you contact the supplier of your top box with your model etc etc you should be able to get a key for your top box.

If it's Givi easiest is just to get a new lock set with two keys.
Not sure on other brands.

That sucks but Honda might help out. I have one lock busted and the other is pretty marginal on my Honda original top box.
The side panniers have good latches - sturdy and well designed.
I like the looks of the 25 litre factory top box on the 1993 but it's small and iffy latches.

Why bother to take it off...use a bungie for now. :D - Least you still have the carry space even if not lockable.

Problem with it is that not only does the lock actually lock the box closed, but it also locks the latch onto the bike, so if it bounces hard it will come off if the lock is not fully locked in position.

I can only find a three digit number engraved on the front of the actual metal lock, but I'll try the local Honda dealer tomorrow with that... and my sob story!

Thanks guys!

Did you lose the key to the top case or the removable aspect of the top case.
If the latter ..yeah you are stuffed.

THe Givi the lock turns one way to open the top - the other to remove the top case.

Have no idea how my little top case comes off....maybe one of the random keys that came with it.

Whizz stop stressing, if you have the 3 digit number you should be good as gold.  I will send you a PM regarding some of the added security regarding that ID you found.

Cheers

Since you seem to know your stuff. Can a replacement ( same case ) or a larger Honda topcase be bought for the 1993? I have the low profile 25 litre but no security - the lock remaining is iffy and the other bust.

like to keep the look but have it work. TIA

Have a look at this site (I used them for parts) if you can not find the part, just ask them the question.

What actually happened, I think, is that I unlocked the top box to put my hat and sunglasses away before putting my helmet on to join the other few hundred riders on the Black Dog. I then must have forgotten to lock the dammed thing again (my keys were not joined to my ignition key because of the helibar risers which make it really awkward to handle, an error that will not happen again I assure you!!!). I suited up, hopped on and rode away with everyone else and it wasn't until much later that I noticed that the lockable handle of the Top Box was unlocked and the keys were nowhere to be found. This of course included my house keys, my bike alarm remote, plus a few other keys, none of which are irreplaceable. The most awkward is the key for the top box. Hence the dummy spit and initial question. The Honda Top Box key locks both the handle which secures the lid of the Top Box closed, and also the latch assembly which locks the Top Box to the bike itself.

However, from what I have gathered and what information I now think I have, I should be able to get a replacement key with not too much trouble...now I'm just concerned how much the key is going to cost me!  :rofl

Paul

OK, I called Pro Honda this morning and explained my predicament. A very helpful chap there called Ray took my mobile number and said he'd get back to me shortly. He rang back about 45 minutes later to tell me that although Honda don't do replacement keys, they do sell replacement lock assemblies...for $22!...and he happened to ahve 1 in stock that he'd had for about 2 years. I let out a small cheer, grabbed my car keys and took off.

Home again 1 hour later with new lock Assy (+ 2 keys). Took me about 20 minutes to complete the job. I removed enough screws to get sufficient access to the inside of the handle and latch, held it all together whilst I removed the retainer washer, spend 5 minutes searching the garage floor for the steel ball bearing which provides the tension which had dropped out when I pulled the old bits out. Found it, fitted it, held it all together and pushed the retainer washer into place. Job done!! Reassembled the handle assembly with the 4 retaining screws and lo and behold it works!! New key, no bother.

Yippee!!!
Cheers,
Paul

A good lock smith should have been able to copy one from the lock itself
But is good you could get a new lock and key for only $22 a bargin and you got two keys :thumb

Most locksmiths can do a key from the number alone, but you pay for accessing the data base.  The lock and key for $22 sounds a cheap solution though.

Guys, trust me when I say that I am happy with $22 for the new lock and 2 keys, as opposed to $1000 for a new Top Box !!!!  :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek

My 1100 top box is a genuine Honda Accessory made by Hepco and Becker. The key even has Hepco embossed in it.
