Going for my Big Boy licence
« on: March 09, 2014, 04:09:28 PM »
Hi all,
I have managed to secure a spot on Monday the 31 march at Morley, 1:50 pm.  :runyay
If anyone is nearby at that time, I’m looking for a favour. I need someone to ride from Beechboro with me into Morley :cop so I can go for my test :law. From memory, it must be a licenced rider of more that 3 years in that class (I think).

I Know I’m asking a lot, but my mate that I usually ride with, will be working up north at this time.
It’s taken me 3 months to secure this spot and the next available is 6 months down the track.  :H

It allows him to sit at the big persons table and eat with the grown ups..  similar to getting your pen license in school when you graduate from having to use a pencil .....    :Stirpot :Stirpot

Or....

He is going for his open license for his motorcycle so he is not restricted to riding either a 250cc (old license model) or a LAMS approved bike up to 650cc.

Seriously, don't you have restricted licences in Vic?
In Qld these days you are restricted to a LAMS bike, which limits the power-to-weight ratio for the first year of riding, then you can re-do the test to ride a more powerful bike if you want to.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Got my licence in NSW. Had to ride one year with red 'P' plate then on to full licence.
Didn't have to sit any additional tests (maybe i'm an illegal). Went from a 250cc to the ST1100. Now riding in SA with a SA licence. why does someone have to ride with you to the test? Sounds a bit like when I was working in Quebec, Canada. You couldn't ride a motorbike on L plates unless you had a full licenced rider riding with you. You were not allowed to ride on your own.

Yes, are restricted for first 12mths ( LAMS), then can ride any bike. If you have a full  car licence to start with. No retest applies :wht11

In WA, going for a full licence, is still another licence, therefore rider must be accompanied by a rider/drive of the same class or higher. Unless I think if you are now licensed under the graduated rider scheme. ( it only just started over here.in WA)

In WA a learner has to be accompanied by an experienced rider when riding on the road.

That seems strange, that a L or P plater needs someone to ride with.  I'd have never got the experience I got in the 20 months on my L and P plates in NZ if I'd had to ride with someone all the time.  I did something like 24,000 km in the 20 months I was on my learner bike.

Mind, I was restricted to a 250 cc, the Aussie based LAMs bikes didn't come in until after I'd got my full license.  And at first, while I was on my L plate, the maximum speed limit was 70 km/hr - though no-one stayed to that, on the open road that speed was dangerous.

As an over-25 I could have got my full license in a minimum of 9 months, normal was 6 months on your L plate then a year on P plates, you could halve your P plate time by doing a defensive driving course.  Over-25s had to do 6 months L plate, then 6 months P plate but that too could be halved by doing a defensive driving course.  I went for my full after about about a year, though I did a defensive driving course with my son while he was going for his car license.  Didn't move up to my 800 cc Boulevard M50 until I'd been riding for 20 months and felt comfortable to do it.
At my age you realise something very important, then ten minutes later you've forgotten it.

Yeah I mean, if I had to ride with someone, I'd have NEVER been able to ride... as noone I knew at the time had their licence... So I think that's a bit of a silly rule

So what would happen if someone from NSW on 'L' or 'P' plates rides into WA or Qld? Would they be booked for riding alone?

Only L plates need to be accompanied not P plates.
It really makes sense you don't let people on L pates in cars drive by them selves.
Things have changed, I got my full bike license in NSW on my 17th birthday.

True but how are they suppose to get riding experience if there's no one to ride with?

I fully approve of learners having a mentor, but what is an accompanying rider going to do if a learner makes a mistake?

Grab the handle bars and steer them out of difficulty?  Give their rear brake a bit of a press and push forward on their handlebar to get them through a corner?

At least the PoPo would have a witness who would know what went wrong for the inquest!
