Shiney HeliBars Riser
« on: September 28, 2012, 09:49:59 PM »
The latest upgrade to my ST1300 is a HeliBars riser plate I purchased from Beema2ST (Thanks Mate :-++)

(Link to HeliBars)
http://www.helibars.com/product/g-version-honda-st1300-2003-2009

Install was very straightforward :thumb
1   Place a towel over the tank to protect it from the handlebars during install.
2   Remove centre plastic cover.
3   Remove plastic covers from the Allen key bolts on the handlebars.

4   Undo all nuts and bolts.

5   Remove standard riser plate.

Riser plate comparison :eek

6   Bolt on new riser plate.

7   Replace handlebars and centre cover.
8   And check that the cables aren’t straining on full lock left and right. (On mine I found the clutch line was a bit tight so I undid one of the cable stays/clips to free up the movement)

On the left hand side of the handlebars there is a pipe running down that has what appears to be a plastic bend in it.
On this pipe is a plastic clip, I removed it and left it off.

(The clip goes around the pipe and through the metal square)

I found this gave more movement without putting strain on the pipe.

9   Go for a test ride :blu13

Here are side by side comparison pics :grin

The riser has made a big difference, I find myself sitting in a more upright and comfortable seating position and that I am able to easily corner with more lean now :runyay

All in all I would highly recommend this upgrade :thumbs
If anyone wants to feel what its like to have (HeliBars Gen3) risers on an ST1300 let me know or have a chat to me on the next ride I’m on.

Cheers

Good job, mate.
The comparison photo says it all.

Now...  where have I seen that tank cover before?    :)

Forget Queensland- you're only two suburbs away from me in Brissie!
Anyway, glad Couch found a good home for it, because it wouldn't do what he'd hoped, namely, accept a recolour dye.
Just check it for grass stains.   :grin

Hi Shiney,

Good write up! What tank bag do you use, and how does it go for clearance to the bar on tight turns like when parking? I have a Bagster Rider but haven't tried it yet without risers, but it looks like it would foul the bag,

regards

The bag still fits OK with risers, but your thumb is pressed right into it on full lock.  I haven't tried it with the bag in "extended" mode (there is a zip to undo to increase the bag height if required).

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply :-[
I use the Bagster Alpha tank bag :thumb
With the bag attached there is less movement but there is still enough to maneuver the bike... just with a bigger turning circle.

Thanks Shiney. That gives me a pretty good idea of how my Rider Bagster will go with risers. Had a 350km ride today with the tank bag on with no trouble. The Bagster Rider seems to be tapered from the front to back, so I have a little more clearance with it, but will measure up against your photos to check.

Thanks again!  :thumbs

Hi Shiney

Helibars have arrived, the big install this weekend, using your guide. The hand grip covers as well.

If I have any hiccups I'll message you.

Cross fingers all goes well.

Shiney. Nice write up mate and useful pics even if you aren't David Bailey.  :eek

I'll have to investigate the risers after having seen the amount of difference they make in the grip positions!

Cheers mate.

I know this is about "risers" I have a "grampbuster" fitted with  manufacturers handle bar and I love it, as it had minimised the strain/stress to my injured wrist/shoulder (work injury, not self pleasure, before you all start)  and is cheaper as a lead up to a "riser" and you can use the "crampbuster" when you have your risers.

My 2 cents worth.

I carry one of those as a fall back in case the cruise control stops working.  Definitely does help.

Awesome news Sab :thumb
I have thought of one extra thing I should add...

On the left hand side of the handlebars there is a pipe running down that has what appears to be a plastic bend in it.
On this pipe is a plastic clip, I removed it and left it off.

(The clip goes around the pipe and through the metal square)

I found this gave more movement without putting strain on the pipe.

Hope this helps :)
Good luck Sab, have fun with it :thumbs

Cheers

PS: I'll add this to the above guide :thumb

Hi Shiney, somehow in my fog of confusion, I ordered the MCL risers instead of the Heli Gen3 riser. Is there much difference? Are the MCL OK?

Don't know how it happened, i think a little bit of the alzimers might kicking in.....

Shiney, mate, I think you did a bang-up job of the "How-To" and your reply set me to thinking that maybe we in OzSTOC, should make a section devoted solely to "How-To" Guides. I've seen a number of this type of guide in our forum but dotted around in different places without any real sense of organisation, and it seems to me that it would be a beneficial arrangement to have "How-To" guides all in one place, under one heading so that they become a ready source of information for anyone attempting the same Farkle.

What do others think, is it worth asking the Mods for a dedicated section for all the "How-To" Guides so that, should you want to do a particular job, you can look up to see if some-one has done it before and created a Guide on the do's and don'ts of the process?
Cheers,
Paul

The MCL riser plate looks like it should follow the same process for install :thumb
