steering head bearings .... help!
« on: July 18, 2015, 05:47:27 PM »
Soooo ..... i have managed to remove the steering stem and remove the bearings ..... thelower bearing was a right royal bastard to get off.   :cuss  ..... watched some youtube vids and saw some people useing a grinder or dremmel to help with removal.

I needed to do this and then inserted a screw driver to help remove. .  Basically no real problems there ..... no damage to stem or anything!

 Yay for me!   :rockon

now .... for the problem

i can not seem to get the lower bearing to seat at the bottom of the stem.  . It is REALLY tight.   :well

Can anyone help with this.

Its stuck about 1 inch from where it needs to be.    :OldMan :fp :fp :think1

Cheers

You may have the wrong bearing....

An easy way to get a bearing on, is to put into the oven at about 150C and let it sit for a while. Put the shaft in an esky full of ice and let it chill. When the time is right, you should be able to drop the bearing straight on and it should seat easily. once temps hav evened out, grease the bearing.

hmmmm ..... that sounds feasible ..... what if I have already greased the bearings? will that make any difference to me putting it in the oven?

I just a quick look in the manual and it seems there's a special tool to remove and replace the stem bearings but  the heating and cooling as suggested is just as good.

I'll post something tomorrow (must remember), but in short:

use a bolt through the top and bottom bearing with a large washers touching the bearings and tighten the bolt till bearings seated.
