Title: Sticky indicator switch
Post by: bloodbikes on May 10, 2013, 06:48:42 PM
Hi guys,

Came to the bike the other day and pressed the indicator switch to turn right and nothing happened, pressed to operate left signal, again nothing happened, tried hazard flashers all working correctly, after pressing the hazards, the indicators started working, any ideas what my problem might be?  I did think it may be dirt or grease on the contactors within the switch grip but was hesitant to take it apart.

Thanks

Go to Altronics, and get some contact cleaner ( or you can use RP7/CRC ) . Open the switch body and give the switch a good flush out, amazing the crud that will come out. give a flush out with ethanol, then apply a good coating of Silicon grease (all available at Altronics I think)  put switch back together and away you go.

Reminds me, I must do my switch as well.

P.S.  separate the switch halves carefully, there are locating pins, but no bits that will fall out.

Thanks for that Brock, but wouldnt applying silicone grease attract the dirt so that it sticks to it again?

Not really, the switch needs lube and if its done properly, it should be good for a couple of years.

I tried the contact cleaner, to no avail, I had to remove the contacts and clean them with fine crocus paper to solve the problem.

Me too Yorkie.
Had to remove and clean the contacts of a few of the handlebar switches with wet&dry during my restoration repairs. Spraying them didn't do the job. Bike had sat for 2 years out in the weather before I bought it (for a very cheap price because of it). All good now.
