New lights
« on: April 10, 2013, 08:54:04 PM »
I fitted some light brackets purchased off MCL to mount my new under mirror spotties.

It was project day today. I took my bike to the local auto electrical dude and spent 3 hrs stripping the steed down to bare bones

I had to remove handle bars and raiser to lift tank cowel as the round edges on the tank bolts were just long enough not to left pass the riser. I fixed that while it was up for them to run the new cables. I filed the round edges off and hit it with a bit of paint. No issues lifting the tank cowel now even with riser fitted :)

More to follow in a sec

Cheers

I then got bolts to fit the 10ml holes in the brackets and mounted the lights. The electrician took 1hr to cable it up and install switches off the head light relay down under the back seat. I then put my baby all back together with only three screws left over :)

This is what the high beam looked like without the new spotties while just sitting in the shed looking down the driveway

This is the difference with the spotties on. Its amazing the difference. They havent been adjusted yet. I will do that another night.

Not sure Graham - I just said I wanted a decent set of lights. He said these were the best for size and distance coverage. He said to fix him up after I get back from the Ulysses AGM. I will let you know then when I get the bill. My auto electrician is into bikes and usually only recommends what he knows to work.

Visionx Pete - here is the link. There is an Australian site - visonx.com.au but i found the info on the below American site-

http://www.visionxusa.com/LED-Optimus_Series/c1_247/index.html

My auto electrician just had them sitting on the shelf and when I saw them though they would look great on the ST. I am going for a ride tonight to adjust them in :)

Thanks Tony.  It's a really neat job, and I like the idea of physically small lights which don't detract from the nice lines of the bike.  Spotties are not on my radar just yet, but I've just ordered a set of risers from BikeQuip before a trip to Canberra early in May.

Mark Worners Auto Electrical , West Wyalong, are great to work with - I got to use the shed and their tools to pull her down, fit the lights to the brackets i installed and they only charged me for the hour to fit the electricals off and supply the lights. I fitted her back together again. I recommend using them  :thumb :clap

Well, you should let us know the details of this Canberra trip so we can organise something (ie border protections!)

Righto - Just been out to adjust the lights and see what a difference they will make.
Normal low beam - Looking up my driveway which is slightly uphill

Normal high beam

High beam with new spotties - Note you can now see the neighbours fence across the road and two walkers on the other side of the road in the middle of the picture

View from the front

At least i will be able to see whats out there in the dark now  :thumbsup :grin

Outstanding move. It always helps to get a good look at something before you hit it. Just taking the piss. They look great and they did illuminate most of my street when you switched them on. The high beam on the ST is pretty good but these things compliment them no end. Enjoy the QLD run ya mongrel.

Just got the bill - Price is $150 a light, fitted total = $360
Very happy with that :grin
By stripping down the bike, mounting the lights and then doing the re assembly saved me a packet as it was very quick for them to wire them up :clap :thumb
