More light needed

Have had a great time reading all the posts regarding driving lights , plenty of info available
My plan is to mount DRL on forks and under the mirrors in LED and HID above the mirrors
I'm using Dick Seng and Police mounts
I have a couple of questions ( never done any auto electrical stuff)
1. Is there a problem in using the negative battery terminal as the earth for all lights
2. How do I find the wire for the high beam to switch on the HID lights
Any other tips would be great

Take the feed from one of the high beam wires leading to the OEM globes and run it to the relay via a on/off switch. My relay is wired to both sides of the battery as well.

This a very basic diagram of how to wire. I just followed the directions in my light set. The earth point went to battery but frame is ok as well.

Basically what Alan posted is what you do. I have HID hi/lo and driving lights set up, as well as various other electrical mods, and am over in Kaleen if you need some pointers (I used to live in Page and Scullin for a while).  Earth does not have to go back to the battery, as there are good places up the front of the ST1100 to use as an earth.

2. How do I find the wire for the high beam to switch on the HID lights

The easiest place to find the wire for the high beam is to take the side panel off and locate the relay that switches the high beam.  If it's not labelled, just operate the beam switch and locate the relay that clicks.  You can tap the wire going to the light or the signal wire coming in to the relay.
A less elegant way, but that uses a shorter wire, is to tap the lead to the high beam near the light itself.  Usually harder because of the wires being cabled together there. 
Just make sure you only use that wire as a signal to the relay, and don't feed it directly to your lights or you'll blow your high beam fuse.

2. How do I find the wire for the high beam to switch on the HID lights

Sorry, I forgot this.

I can't recall the wire colour but all I did was pull out one of the globes, put the lights on High and with the feed wire (for HID etc ) contacted the terminals on the light plug until the lights came on (trial and error) and took notice of the colour. There's only three wires......one earth, one for Low and one for Hi. An electrical tester of some type might have been better but I don't have one.

If you have an 1100 all the relays are in the front fairing which is why I went directly to the LH headlight as it was fairly easy to get to
