Diesel's LED Spot Lights.....
« on: October 22, 2013, 09:12:13 PM »
In the next iteration of my lighting experience for long distance riding, I am trying out these 2,160 lumens LED Spotlights.

They are much smaller than the HID cannons they are replacing.....

Here are some comparison shots...

They are 6,000K colour, instant light, and draw a lot less load on the electrical system.

I'll to a report when they are fully installed and operational.

I have also removed my under-mirror 55w halogens which will not be replaced with anything.

Cheers, Diesel

UPDATE EDIT: INSTALLATION COMPLETE - PICS...

While I was at it, I also installed an alarm system I had sitting around for a while... - BOY! What a SCREAMER!            |-i

I'll hear it from the next postcode!

Cheers, Diesel

Brand?  Model? Source?  Price?
Reason for two copies of photo #2?

All the usual boring questions...                           :popcorn

I bought a pair of similar lights ages ago and had thought of fitting them to my ST. In the meantime I set them up as camp lights on the rear of my Land Cruiser and they are surprisingly bright and light up the area well. I think mine are only around 1800 lumens or so. I'm not sure how well mine would go lighting up 'long distance' but they would certainly show the road surface up quite well in front of the bike.

Well worth a try at that price.  I am also thinking of some led spots as it is not that often the HIDs can be used when there is traffic about, but they are great on deserted roads.  I suppose a good test would be to only fit one and do a comparison out on the road between them.

It seems that LEDs that put out over 3000 lumens are much heavier and far more expensive.

Except maybe some fork-mounted daylight running lights DLRs (since the wiring and switches are already in place.....       :think1

TJ - do you have any pics of your 1100 with the DLRs on?

I'm keen to hear how you get on with them.   One good set of LED spotties seems like an elegant answer to the need for extra lighting, without making the bike look too blinged up.

Were the under mirrors on a bracket?  If so what's happening with them?  hint hint.  :grin

Have you had the opportunity for a night ride yet?

Cheers,

Toldja so.
I don't dare set the thing in case it goes off.  I certainly don't like the noise it makes when you set it, let alone when it goes off.

No chance to ride at night yet - will try for this week.

No bracket - attached them directly to the mirror covers with no probs - ever.

AND... Thanks TJ.

I'll append a few pics to my other HID at night report with the LED review.

If you look carefully at the lenses in the top pics you can see that in front of the globe diode is the pencil beam shape, but all the light bouncing off the reflector hits the diffuser to give a flooding effect closer to the bike.

Hi Icor64,

have a look here.....

You'll have to sort out some brackets if you are not mounting them directly to the mirror covers.

Yes and they seem to do the job very adequately. I believe one could maintain a speed of 100-120km/h in total confidence of not outriding one's lights. (150-200m)

They also provide a good amount of 'flooding' directly in front of the bike to quite a wide angle.

Full report with pics to come (when I get the opportunity).

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Diesel

I think I'll keep my retina destroyers over your electronic candles thanks Diesel.

I have added some four cree LEDs and can say I'm not that impressed with them.  Lots of complaints over the UHF about how bright they are from in front, but no penetration power to shine down the road.

Will be interesting to see how it goes though.

I tried some of diesels candles on my old rodeo ute. They are reasonably good provide a fair amount of flooding. They need to be setup properly which takes time but I'm happy enough with them. Off to work at 430 so will get to see how they go

High beam with 10 watt lights and diesel's 27 watt 30 deg spread and 10 watt spot plus standard lights. My thanks to diesel for finding and recommending these lights.
